Lenovo Ideapad S110 may be blazing the Cedar Trail, ditching netbook moniker

Between the line of Cedar Trail notebooks marching their way through the FCC and Intel's recent shipping announcement, it's high time manufacturers started parading out next year's kits. Today's tease hails from Lenovo, which has outed the Ideapad S110 in no less than four fabulous colors. Although the outfit's promo video doesn't touch on hardware specs, a Pro Vantage product page claims the setup sports an Intel Atom 2600 processor. The self titled "mini notebook" features a 10.1-inch "HD display," presumably rocking the same 720p resolution as the rig's optional 2 megapixel webcam, if not the full 1080p Intel says the N2600 supports. Buyers will also be able to opt for an optional 3G radio, though USB 3.0, Lenovo quick start "instant on," and a 98-percent full-size chiclet keyboard all come standard. The video didn't pack an official press release, but we hear there's a major trade show right around the corner that's just perfect for announcing products.

Implications of the dissolution of the Soviet Union

Read more on:? USSR, Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Near Abroad, CIS, Eurasian Union, Occupy movement

13:19 30/12/2011

20 years ago one of the two superpowers ceased to exist. The Soviet Union, which was the principal enemy for most of the Western World for almost half a century was gone, not with a bang, but with a whimper. Matthew Rojansky, Deputy Director of Carnegie Endowment? Russia and Eurasia Program shares his views on the perception of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the U.S. establishment as well as among common people and points out differences between modern leftists and leftists of the Cold War era.

The assessment of the dissolution of the Soviet Union on the part of ?official? America was quite diffuse or was a combination of many different simultaneous, sometimes conflicting evaluations of what was going on. Americans, or better yet the entire world, including Russians, failed to predict the event, and so a part of the response was an attempt to justify what happened, to understand, in the first place, how something so unexpected could have happened. You could have seen a lot of attempts immediately after 1991 trying to look back and understand what had happened.

There was another dimension which was very important ? trying to understand, given that we missed this big development, as it caught us by surprise, trying to get ahead of the curve and understand where things were going to go. And, of course, peoples? values as well as national interests came into play, and this was the beginning of the whole movement, which became quite well-known in the 1990?s, of helping to rebuild the former Soviet state, namely Russia. Other countries, too, and this is where many great idealistic experimental projects came into play, were trying to help rebuild the Russian economy as a free market economy, experimenting with privatization, etc.

Therefore, all of the reactions can be called as very intuitive. People pursued many different and diffuse paths in responding to what had happened because people had very different views on this very momentous event. It was even more than a decade after 1991, during the resurgence of Russia, specifically after Putin comes to power and Russia begins to regain international standing, when Americans finally start to sit back and think about what had really happened in 1991 in a comprehensive way.

So, there is a sort of irony, that while it was happening we were sort of stuck in the details of it, and that it wasn?t until after it happened when we were able to pull out and pull back; and here is the real irony ? by the time Americans began to think about the collapse of the Soviet Union in a more comprehensive way we couldn?t really do anything about what was happening in the Soviet space anymore anyway. That was the time when Russia had essentially decided where it wanted to go.

As much as common Americans remember important historical events and honor our veterans and our history we are very much a forward-looking society, and we shouldn?t forget that we are a nation of immigrants, we tend to think about the future, we love new technology and new developments; and so, in a sense, if 1989-1991 was an end to a historical era, the era of post-WWII, Cold War, the end to the defining of international order by the Soviet-American interaction, or the Soviet-Western interaction, Americans were really prepared, as soon as all of that left headlines in the newspapers.

Specifically after 1991, Americans were prepared to move on. At the moment when Gorbachev resigned there were lots of headlines in the newspapers about the event, which CNN was covering live from Moscow, Americans thought mostly in terms of victory because it had been defined as a struggle between one set of ideas and values and another and one of them simply ceased to exist. So when that happened, it appeared to be a victory.

Nevertheless, I don?t think it was a victory that Americans reveled in or dwelled or obsessed in or one that we made a big part of our national identity. If we think about the presidential campaign in 1992 that brought Bill Clinton to power, we can note that he wasn?t campaigning on the end of the Soviet Union ? in one way or another ? the only part of his campaign, and I am pointing to Clinton?s campaign because he ultimately won.

George H. W. Bush, who, as some could argue, was the man who managed from the American perspective the decline and fall of the Soviet Union, as part of Reagan?s team and then on his own, was the one who could campaign on winning the Cold War. Clinton couldn?t ? he had nothing to do with it. He was the governor of Arkansas. The only part of the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union that played any real significance in his coming to the scene was what he called the ?peace dividend?, and that was basically unloading a lot of expensive military obligations that the United States had in Europe and at home because there was no longer an external enemy.

Therefore, the general mood of the Americans was about forgetting the past or shaking off the baggage of the past and looking forward. And, by and large, it?s a very American way to react to this event.

However, today a new leftist trend has emerged ? mainly as Occupy Wall Street movement though you can witness rise in the global left. I can?t say how it changed from the inside, because I?ve never been a part of it. But as an outside observer, the obvious change was really after 1989, after the Soviet influence was rolled back out of Central and Eastern Europe. That?s when the sense of legitimacy that accompanied a lot of the overtly ideologically leftist governments evaporated, and obviously, for the Soviet Union, even before the collapse of the Soviet Union, when it stopped subsidizing regimes around the world, not only in Europe but also Cuba and Africa.

So, all of a sudden the trappings of legitimacy, of being a legitimate part of the international system that went with these experimental, unsustainably irrational leftist governments disappeared. Therefore, the effect that that has had over the past two decades on non-governmental leftist movements, whether you look at, for example, the Union in the West, even socialist parties and communist parties are almost an irrelevant factor, so you have to look at relatively moderate leftist groups, despite the fact that they increasingly became a full part of the system and find their own place within the system rather than aspiring or even having the backup option available of an alternative system.

It?s just incredible, the view that there is a wholesale alternative system that you can turn to that would be better than the current system ? perhaps our view of change within the context of the current system. The Occupy Wall Street movement and the global protests are perfect example ? if you look at the people occupying American cities, they are not protesting in the way that leftist protestors did in the 1960?s and 70?s. They?re not saying ?Bring down the corporate state!?, but they are saying that it?s unfair the way that wealth is being distributed right now in the current system and it should be changed. They?re not saying ?Bring down the state!? It?s a big difference, because they know that if you bring down the state there is nothing credible to replace it with. There is no alternative model of governance out there. And that is a big difference. In 1985, and certainly in 1975, you couldn?t have said that because there was an entire world representing an alternative model, which wasn?t sustainable and we know that now ? but at that time it wasn?t clear.

Guns Are The New Yoga [Sports]

Guns Are The New YogaWomen are apparently turning to target-shooting in increasing numbers. And some say they find the experience calming.

CBS evinces unnecessary surprise at the fact that women ? even those who might enjoy such practices as wearing skirts and rearing children ? can also shoot guns. Shooting instructor Lesa Ellanson sets them straight: "I think a capable woman is the most feminine expression of power that there is." There's nothing surprising about a lady with a firearm, but there is something kind of surprising about Deirdre Gailey's statement: "I'm a yoga instructor, I work at a vegan bakery ? and I also like to shoot guns."

Gailey explains that "yoga's Zen-like quality can be applied to shooting guns in a lot of ways. Shooting guns takes focus, concentration, and it doesn't always have to be about violence." Ellanson also says the sport makes her feel "relaxed." That's not the word I'd necessarily use to describe practicing with an extremely loud and deadly weapon. Then again, maybe it makes sense that women are trading in their yoga mats for firearms. It's about to be 2012, after all, and during the apocalypse, a downward dog will not protect you.

Putin says ready for talks with Russian opposition (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that he was ready for dialogue with the opposition after the biggest protest against his 12-year rule at the weekend but added he was at a loss for a leader to hold talks with.

"The dialogue should take place," Putin told reporters. "In what form? I will think about it. They should formulate some kind of shared platform ... Who do we talk to?"

Tens of thousands gathered in central Moscow on Saturday to protest against election results that gave Putin's United Russia party a majority in the lower house of parliament or Duma. International monitors said the vote was marred by violations.

Putin, accused of being out of touch with the growing protest movement, has walked a thin line between questioning the opposition's credibility as a real political force and addressing protesters' concerns in the country of 140 million.

Russia's opposition, marginalized under Putin's tightly controlled political system, have been galvanized by the protests but have failed to unite behind a single leader.

Putin said the demonstrators were made up of a mix of marginalized liberal movements, communists and nationalists, who had so far failed to reach a common set of demands.

"Is there a common platform there? No there isn't," he said. "We need to talk to everybody about their claims, about their problems, but it requires some thinking."

He refused to comment on blogger Alexei Navalny, whose arrest during a protest the day after the December 4 election won him prominence among the opposition. He was released last week.

A charity single recorded by wives of British soldiers is now in Britain's number one spot.

Their song: "Wherever You Are" has sold over 556,000 copies.

The Military Wives hit the coveted number one position after outselling every other record in the top ten.

The charity single was recorded after BBC presenter, Gareth Malone, formed the women into a group.

The Military Wives choir, has now performed on many British TV shows as well as in person at various venues.

Profits from their single are being given to military charities the Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

In an interview, Gareth Malone, described the number one hit as an honour "well deserved."

He said: "It's testament to the Military Wives hard work and the nation's support of them, as well as the power of choral singing. Who would have guessed in those first rehearsals that we could take Christmas Number One?"

Dream Cancel Talks to SCR Champ LDA B.A.L.A. on KOF?s Balance, Mexico?s FGC

The helpful Edgar of the Dream Cancel forums has posted an interview with the best King of Fighters XIII player in North America, LDA B.A.L.A. of Puebla, Mexico. The 2011 SoCal Regionals champion (and ReveLAtions champion) (and Evo 2k11 champion) shares his thoughts on Capcom specialists playing KoF XIII, differences between the fighting game communities of Mexico and the U.S., and why?SNK?s answer to Lady Gaga is top tier.

He [Benimaru] has a fireball, uppercut (1 frame), command grab (1 frame), he has many attacks that have high priority, his jump is a crossup and it has priority, he has a normal air grab, he has an air fireball, he can do a fireball on a backdash and has good recovery, his HD combo is easy to finish off with a neomax, he can punish you? after a normal grab in the corner (anywhere on the screen with an EX command grab), he can keep you away with his normal. His only bad matchup is Vs Benimaru hahahahahaaha.

B.A.L.A. also says that he will be at Evo 2k12 and hopes to be at Final Round in March. And like many people from Mexico, he hates Am?rica. ?Arriba las Chivas!

I understand that people use cases to give their phone some flair, but I would love to see some more color to more cell phones. I made fun of all the Nokia colors, but once I started seeing them on videos I kinda shut up. It makes them stand out.

That being said, white may be the worst color to use. I can't keep my black phones clean. It wouldn't even be a fair fight for me. I like the looks of the Radar, but, wow, I would have it 4 different shades of grimey in a couple of months.

3 Afghan civilians die in truck explosion in south (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? The Afghan Interior Ministry says three civilians have died in an explosion of a truck in the south of the country.

The ministry statement Friday says the truck appeared to have been transporting a bomb through a town in Takhta Pul district in Kandahar province, when it blew up. It was not immediately clear what happened to the driver.

Meanwhile, the ministry says insurgents tried to overrun late Thursday a police checkpoint in western Ghor province. One attacker was killed and three policemen were wounded in the clashes.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs Asus Eee Pad Transformer: Android Tablet War

Tablet computers make great gifts, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Eee Pad Tranformer Prime are two of the best. Both have been out for over six months now, so they can be found for around $400. Not a bad price for a 10-inch device. Both have front and rear-facing cameras, good resolution and run the Android system. Samsung has already confirmed they will be updating their Galaxy line of devices in the coming weeks. Asus has said on their Web site the Eee Pad Transformer should get the update, but it will be up to Google as to when that happens. It could be a couple more months.

The $400 price mentioned above is for the 16 gigabyte version of both devices, but they each come in a 32 gigabyte version and there's even a 64 gigabyte variant of the Galaxy Tab. Galaxy Tab is a bit ligher than the Eee Pad, thinner and has more rounded corners rather than squared off. It doesn't have a mini HDMI port, microSD card reader or companion dock that turns the tablet into a notebook computer. There are keyboard accessories that connect to the Galaxy Tab, but the Eee Pad dock adds more than just keys. For an extra $150, it adds twice the battery life, a trackpad, two full-size USB ports and full-size SD card reader. It adds quite a bit (and lends to the Transformer name), and people seem to really like it because it won Stuff Magazine's gadget of the year for 2011. It's even got a sequel. The Transformer Prime should debut in the next couple of weeks.

Like us on Facebook

This is a close fight, because they devices are very similar, right down to the plastic bodies. Once you get to the store and start playing with them, you'll likely find one you like better without even looking at which is faster or lighter, but you can use this as a guide. The tablet war is a tie because the Transformer might be a slightly better device, but the Galaxy Tab will get the Android 4.0 update much sooner. Tell us in the comments what you look for in a tablet.

(AP Photo/Karim Kadim, File)

(AP) ? Iraq's Shiite prime minister told Kurdish authorities Wednesday to hand over the Sunni vice president, who fled to the semiautonomous region to escape an arrest warrant on charges he ran hit squads targeting government officials.

Then a Kurdish presidential spokesman ruled out handing Tariq al-Hashemi over to Baghdad, turning up the heat under what has become the worst Iraqi political crisis in years.

The charges, leveled a day after the last American troops left Iraq, have opened up a new round of the Shiite-Sunni sectarian tensions of the type that pushed the country to the brink of civil war just a few years ago.

Al-Hashemi, the country's highest ranking Sunni political figure, said Tuesday the allegations by his longtime rival, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, are fabricated and politically motivated. He accused al-Maliki of concentrating power in his hands and torpedoing national reconciliation between Sunnis and Shiites.

"I do not allow myself and others to bargain over Iraqi blood," al-Maliki said in his first public comments on the warrant. He said Iraq is a unified county, and the Kurdish authorities should hand over al-Hashemi to the Iraqi justice system. "If they will not hand him over or let him flee or escape, this will lead to problems," the premier said.

There has been speculation that al-Hashemi may try to flee the country to Turkey, which shares a border with the northern Kurdish region.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu offered his country's help in resolving the Iraqi political crisis, but he was cool to the idea of hosting al-Hashemi. "As an Iraqi statesman it would be more correct for him to remain in Iraq," he said.

The Sunni minority dominated Iraq under Saddam Hussein until he was ousted by the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. The Shiites have held power ever since, and many Sunnis feel the Shiite-led government is determined to keep the them from ever regaining positions of power.

The charges raised suspicions that al-Maliki ordered the arrest of al-Hashemi as part of a campaign to consolidate his hold on power out of fear that Sunnis inside and outside of Iraq are plotting against him. The conflict has sharpened the divisions in what is shaping up to be one of the most serious political confrontations in Iraq in years.

Al-Hashemi denied charges he paid his bodyguards to kill government officials during the heyday of Iraq's Sunni insurgency. Most of the accusations date back to the height of the internal war in 2006 and 2007, when neighbors turned on neighbors and whole sections of Baghdad were expunged of one Muslim sect or the other.

Al-Hashemi fled to the Kurdish region on Sunday, before the arrest warrant was announced and before purported confessions from his bodyguards aired on Iraqi television Monday evening. On Sunday he was barred from leaving the country.

Al-Maliki effectively runs the Interior Ministry, where the charges originated. Al-Hashemi's Sunni-backed party, Iraqiya, which shares power in al-Maliki's government, has repeatedly accused the prime minister of hoarding power and last weekend boycotted parliament because al-Maliki refused to give up control over key posts such as the defense and interior ministries. The prime minister has not appointed permanent ministers of defense or interior since he came to office a year ago.

Al-Hashemi has taken refuge in the Kurdish region, which is part of Iraq but has its own security forces. The Iraqi army and national police do not operate there.

As long as the Kurdish officials allow him to stay there, he is effectively immune from prosecution in Baghdad. The Kurds, who have been trying to work out a solution to the crisis, are also wary of al-Maliki's perceived authoritarian streak. But they have also clashed with Sunni politicians from Iraqiya over the future of disputed areas in northern Iraq claimed by both Baghdad and the Kurds.

For now at least, the Kurds appear to be siding with al-Hashemi in the increasing cycle of accusations and counter-accusations that has become a daily spectacle in Iraq.

Fuad Hussain, a spokesman for Massoud Barzani, the president of the three provinces that make up the Kurdish region, said al-Hashemi is a guest of the president, and handing him over to Baghdad is "not possible."

The charges have thrown Iraq into crisis just days after the last U.S. troops left the country and ended a nearly nine-year war.

Vice President Joe Biden called both al-Maliki and Osama al-Nujaifi, the speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, late Tuesday. He stressed to al-Maliki the "urgent need" for him to meet with leaders of other political blocs to help resolve the crisis.

Al-Maliki is also pushing for a vote of no confidence against the Sunni Deputy Prime Minister, Saleh al-Mutlaq, also a member of Iraqiya.

Al-Hashemi addressed the charges against him at a news conference in the northern city of Irbil on Tuesday. He said the case was "fabricated" to embarrass him and Iraqiya.

When asked whether al-Hashemi could get a fair trial in Iraq considering that the confessions have already aired on television, al-Maliki defended the treatment of the vice president.

"We gave the dictator Saddam a fair trial, and we will guarantee a fair trial for al-Hashemi," he said.

Al-Maliki also threatened to appoint new Cabinet ministers if the ministers from Iraqiya do not attend Cabinet sessions. He said that Iraqiya would be able to keep those positions and nominate new people from within their ranks.

Iraqiya has not indicated whether it will pull out of the government, but al-Maliki seemed prepared for that eventuality. He did not address Iraqiya directly, but during his opening remarks raised the possibility of having a simple majority government.

Now Iraq has a unity government that includes all the major factions, including Iraqiya and al-Maliki's State of Law alliance. The unwieldy government makes it difficult to make decisions, but supporters say it lessens the risk of violence that could result if large segments of the population are cut out of power.

Steve Jobs awarded posthumous Grammy for 'significant contributions to music'

It's pretty difficult to argue that both Apple's iPod and -- to an even greater extent -- its contentious iTunes software haven't had a massive impact on the music industry. The Recording Academy has decided to recognize this, naming the former CEO and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs for a Trustees Award for "outstanding contributions to the industry in a non-performing capacity." It will be the second Grammy to celebrate Apple's contributions to the music industry -- its working in recording netted it a Technical Grammy exactly ten years ago.

LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) ? An armed robber in Loveland may have been targeting a cafe but he wound up demanding cash from an insurance office a few doors down.

The gunman robbed the Farmer?s Insurance office late Monday afternoon. Workers say he was dressed in a ski mask, goggles, blue hooded jacket and gloves.

The suspect only ended up with about $10 since insurance isn?t exactly a cash business.

?He came in, had a gun, basically, ?Give me your money.? She said, ?We don?t have money at our office,? ? Farmers Insurance District Manager Clint Sales said.

Sales says the suspect was lucky to escape because next door was a class full of martial arts students who, had they seen him, might have been ready to practice their skills.
