Nexus device factory images updated to Android 4.2.1 (JOP40D)

Nexus factory images

Just a quick heads up that, as promised, the factory images for the Nexus 4, and Nexus 7 have been updated, should you need to get back to stock. Nice and easy. If you notice that there's no updated image for the Nexus 10, you've got a good eye. Google's JBQ in the Android Building Group notes that there was a problem with the JOP40C image (which has since been fixed). So hang tight. More on that here.

Otherwise, get your download on should you need to.

Steven Tyler Apologizes to Nicki Minaj over Harsh 'American Idol' Remarks, Sparks Twitter Rant: Insists 'I'm Not a Racist' after 'Cornfield' Diss

(Photo : (Photo:Reuters)) Steven Tyler to Nicki Minaj - 'I'm not a racist!'

During a recent interview with MTV, Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler had some rather harsh words of "advice" for "American Idol" newbie Nicki Minaj. Somehow, the rocker managed to combine "Bob Dylan," "cornfield," and "Phillip Phillips" all in one statement... and basically dissed Minaj's musical talent and taste. The "Starships" songstress didn't take the remarks lying down, and jumped into her own Twitter tirade against Tyler on Monday (Nov. 26). Now Tyler wants his fans to know that he isn't a racist and that his comments weren't meant to personally offend or disparage Minaj. Do Mstarz fans think the pop diva will accept Tyler's apology?

Like Us on Facebook

Here's the remark that Tyler recently made in an interview with MTV News, which Minaj found downright racist:

"You just have to give your opinion. It wasn't hard for me, but I would imagine it's hard for some people. They need a manager to say, 'Shut the f--- up, and just give them your opinion'... These kids, they just got out of a car from the Midwest somewhere, and they're in New York City - they're scared to death! If it was Bob Dylan, Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield! Whereas, if it was Bob Dylan with us, we would have brought the best of him out, as we did with Phillip Phillips. Just saying."

Minaj then lashed out at the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer on Twitter, posting:

@NICKIMINAJ: "Steven Tyler said I would have sent Bob Dylan to a cornfield??? Steven, you haven't seen me judge one single solitary contestant yet!... I understand you really wanted to keep your job but take that up with the producers. I haven't done anything to you. That's a racist comment... You assume that I wouldn't have liked Bob Dylan??? why? black? rapper? what? go f##k yourself and worry about yourself babe... LOL lets make him a shirt that says 'No Coloreds Allowed' then escort him down 2 Barbara Walters so he can tell how he was threatened w/guns... When Steven 1st went on Idol he was ridiculed by his peers & fans alike. Called a sell out. So what does he do? Ridicule the next judge."

Woah.

Tyler then tried to save some face on Tuesday when he appeared on Canada's entertainment show "eTalk" - "I apologize if it was taken wrong, Nicki. But I am the farthest from (being a racist). I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist... I don't know where she got that out of me saying I'm not sure how she would've judged Bob Dylan."

Oh, the "American Idol" drama (and the season hasn't even aired yet)!

In the end, Tyler basically admitted "my bad" - "Maybe I spoke out of turn. But a racist I'm not, Nicki."

NHL, union get back to bargaining with mediators

Whether federal mediators will provide enough help to end the NHL lockout in time to save the hockey season is still unknown.

At least they had a good first day.

Negotiators from the NHL and the players' association returned to the bargaining table Wednesday for the first time in a week and the first time with outside voices contributing to the talks.

The location was secret, and so was what was discussed, but the talks went well enough that the sides will be back at the negotiating table Thursday.

"No comments," was all NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly would say Wednesday night in an email to The Associated Press.

NHLPA executive director Don Fehr issued a short statement, saying: "A small group of NHLPA staff and players met today with two experienced FMCS mediators. We expect that these discussions will resume on Thursday."

It was the first meeting between the sides since a get-together that lasted just over two hours last week in New York after the locked-out players' association made a new comprehensive proposal that was quickly rejected by the NHL.

The sides agreed Monday to use the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. George Cohen, the service's director, assigned deputy director Scot Beckenbaugh and director of mediation services John Sweeney to the negotiations. Beckenbaugh and Sweeney met separately with the two sides before talks began in full Wednesday.

It wasn't immediately known how long negotiations went on before they ended in the early evening.

In the previous meeting last week, Fehr said the sides were $182 million apart in a five-year deal, which comes to $1.2 million annually for each of the 30 teams.

The NHL wants to increase eligibility for free agency to 28 years of age or eight seasons of service, up from 27 years or seven seasons. The league has also proposed adding a year of service for salary arbitration eligibility, hiking it from 1-4 to 2-5 years of service, depending on the age a player signs.

On Oct. 16, the NHL proposed a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue, down from the players' 57 percent portion of $3.3 billion last season. With guaranteed contracts likely to push the players' share over the halfway mark at the start of the next deal, management wants that money to come out of future years to bring the overall percentage down to an even split over the length of an agreement.

Players previously had proposed they receive a guaranteed amount of income each year.

Fehr said players proposed they get $393 million over the length of the deal, while the NHL is at $211 million. Owners want a seven-year deal, which the union says is too long because less than half the current players will be active by the last season.

This is the league's third lockout since 1994. The first was settled on Jan. 11 and the last one led to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announcing the cancellation of the 2004-05 season on Feb. 15. That marked the only time a major professional North American sports league lost an entire season because of a labor dispute.

This lockout, which reached its 74th day Wednesday, has already forced the cancellation of all games through Dec. 14, the New Year's Day Winter Classic, and All-Star Weekend that was slated for Columbus, Ohio, in January.

Five great games like World of Warcraft ? Video Games Reviews ...

games like WoW

The term ?WoW clone? gets thrown around a lot when it comes to MMO games. Much in the way that every game with a first person view of a huge gun is not a Doom clone, there are plenty of MMORPGs that deliver a great gaming experience without being a copy of the Blizzard behemoth.

Even so, there is no denying that the most popular MMORPG for the last few years has been World of Warcraft, so it makes sense that we?d see a few concepts shared between different titles. Since there?s more than one place that sells hamburgers, it only makes sense that there?s more than one place that offers the WoW-like experience.

Games like WoW

Talisman Online

Video games feel like one of the only things for which saying ?if it?s free you can?t complain? doesn?t seem to apply. This counts double in the world of online gaming, where free-to-play games rise and fall on how happy they keep their communities. Talisman Online has a small but highly active community, and for the most part that group is pretty satisfied.

Account creation for Talisman is a little frustrating, mostly because they break a few basic internet rules, like emailing you your password in plain text. Once, I got over that and created myself a character, Talisman does a pretty good job of making sure you have a lot of unique content to start off with. The game places you in the ?Ancient Orient? against a dark evil that you must vanquish. Instead of allowing to choose one faction or another to play for, you?re stuck being the good guys.

A good part of the game feels like it could be played solo, but once you leave the starting area for your character you can team up with whoever is willing. The battle system feels almost identical to World of Warcraft, right down to the starting placement of attacks and the hovering icons for NPC?s that have things for you to do. The soundtrack that accompanies this game feels like it is straight out of Final Fantasy, including the more aggressive but still 16-bit battle music.

If you?ve got some time to kill and want to jump into something a little different, Talisman Online is free to play and requires very little in terms of hardware.

Games like WoW

Allods Online

Given the highly social nature of MMORPGs, most of these games do very little to integrate with your existing social networks. It?s not hard to see why ? maintaining an online community yourself gives you the ability to control what is being said (this is good for keeping conduct above board) and see everything as it happens. Allods Online surprised me out of the box by offering my account creation to just come from Facebook, as though I were playing a smaller, web-based game.

The basic concepts behind Allods are all very familiar. You?ve got two battling factions to choose from, and neither of the races on either side offer any appreciable benefit during gameplay. Allods has a ton of class types, and limits certain races to certain classes initially. Once you are in the game, you go through a tutorial style first mission that gradually acclimates you to the rules of the game and the placement of the keys for everything. By the time you have joined the rest of the world you find yourself with a few levels worth of experience and the required skills to play the game.

Allods introduced some interesting concepts that aren?t found in a lot of other MMO?s. The spellcaster classes, for example, have access to spells early on that can be stored for combat later. Since one of the key PVP advantages to playing against casters is the ability to get up close and personal before they can charge up most of their powerful spells, this concept introduces a great dynamic that helps shake up the stereotypes found in a lot of MMO?s today. Since it is free to play and requires very little of your system, Allods Online is a great game for any fan of WoW style gameplay to check out.

Games like WoW

Star Wars: The Old Republic

There?s nothing wrong with Azeroth or anything, but sometimes you just need a few lightsabers in your life. Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) takes your character throughout what fans of the Star Wars franchise affectionately refer to as a stroll down memory lane. A game like this makes perfect sense, especially since Star Wars already has all of the hard parts laid out for you. There?s a vast yet extremely detailed universe, more races than you can count, and a clear cut line in the sand between one faction and another. It?s as if George Lucas planned the whole thing! All you need to make it work is a game publisher clever enough to shape the game around concepts that MMO gamers were already familiar with and you?d have a hit, right?

While it is pretty clear that elements of the character creation, battle system, and even the grind-style missions aren?t exactly original thoughts, there?s plenty of original content in SWTOR. The game features a completely unique set of plot points for each class type, though by staggering them through the same basic areas there?s still plenty of interaction between the classes throughout the game.

Recent updates like the Legacy system allow users to create entire families with stories that link into one another, allowing for the idea of a personal back story to flourish. The game itself has seen a number of attempts to keep users playing the game, including the move to Free to Play (with some restrictions).

On patrol with a shark ranger in Indonesia

Conservation International works with Indonesian children to help them learn how to protect the most diverse underwater region in the world. ?NBC News' Richard Engel reports.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

RAJA AMPAT, Indonesia ? The remote Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat is home to an underwater treasure trove of coral reefs and tremendous biodiversity, miles away from polluted urban centers and human encroachment.

The faraway islands in Western Papua, regarded by many marine experts as having the potential to help restore the world's ailing coral reefs, are vulnerable to the unchecked exploitation of a lucrative treasure that is rapidly disappearing from Indonesia's waters: sharks.

China's growing appetite for the de rigueur shark fin soup has attracted fishermen from elsewhere in Indonesia and Southeast Asia to the waters around Raja Ampat's 1,500 islands.

Alarmed, conservationists and local villagers worked together to create the Misool Eco Resort and Conservation Center in 2005, establishing a 165-square-mile "No-Take Zone" that banned fishing.

Related content:

When a neighboring village requested to take part, the area was expanded to 472 square miles, roughly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The Misool team also recruited a group of rangers to help patrol the waters for illegal fishermen. Earlier this year, NBC News had an opportunity to go on patrol with Abdul Razak Tamher, 31, one of the first rangers.

Q: Before 2005, what were shark and fish stocks like in this area of Raja Ampat?

A: Before 2005, one of the main occupations of the people of my village was fishing. That's what we did every day and one of the big things fished were sharks. By the 2000s there were very few sharks left in the area, but in the 1980s and 90s when I was fishing there were lots of sharks. A lot of people used dynamite and potassium cyanide for fishing.

Q: So did villagers in Misool know they had to change the way things were done?

A: At that time, people here really didn't think much about shark or marine conservation. We didn't know shark fishing was illegal (prior to the formation of the No-Take Zone in 2005, the local governor had actually signed a law against shark fishing) because nobody from the government came out here to tell or educate us that it was illegal and bad for the ecology to fish sharks.

It was really through the efforts of the resort to educate the village about the importance of sharks and protecting the marine environment that we saw the importance of it and began to appreciate the natural beauty ourselves. Now if people from my village hear of a shark fishing boat coming into this area, they get really upset.

NBC News' Richard Engel talks to a Conservation International scientist as he identifies a new species of fish.

Q: Is conservation a completely foreign idea here? Isn't there a long tradition of seasonal fishing and spiritual beliefs around protecting certain animals?

A:?We've embraced principles of conservation since the beginning of our culture. They were simple ideas, but they still worked for us. For example, we would harvest clams from the ocean for six months, then depending on the ocean conditions, we would close that area for sometimes up to a year before harvesting again.

Many of the original families in this area are forbidden to eat different sea creatures like sharks or turtles or other kinds of fish. In each case, there is a reason why each family respects and protects a certain animal. It could be that a family member or fisherman generations ago was rescued by that species or guided to land at a time of need. Many still believe that if someone in the family breaks this taboo, they will get sick or something bad will happen.

Q:?In 2006, the rangers were formed with just five of you and a few of you were actually former shark fishermen. What made you make such a dramatic change in your life?

?A:?I personally wasn't involved in shark fishing, but other original rangers that were here in the beginning and their village elders were shark fishermen. Even though they were shark fishermen and lived off the harvest of the ocean, they realized that they needed to preserve this area and the marine life for future generations to come.

Many of us felt ? and still feel today ? that if we told our children or grandchildren that there were lots of fish and sharks in the sea around these islands and they went there and saw none they would think that we were liars and we just couldn't allow that to happen.

Q:?What was it like in the early days with the rangers?

A:?The rangers weren't really effective until 2009 because at that time there was only one speed boat that was always busy getting lumber for the construction of the resort. So we would only go out if we saw an illegal boat go past the resort. From 2006-2009, we went out almost every day. In the months of June and July, the area was choked with shark finning boats from as far away as Java that cast long lines with sometimes 1,000 or 2,000 hooks to catch sharks.

To expel the foreign boats, it wasn't a problem. We would just go up to the boats and tell them leave and they would go. Local fishermen were tougher. Most of the problems had to do with local fishermen not agreeing with the contract we signed with Misool Eco Reserve to create the no-take zones or claiming they were not around when the contract had been reached. They would also say we have it easy since we work as rangers and make a lot of money, so we don't need to fish like they did.

Q:?How soon after the reserve formed did you start to see results from the sanctuary?

A:?After two or three years, I started to see a lot of sharks in the lagoons and my friends who went diving began to see more fish. There were just some researchers here in Misool who were shocked by the amount of fish who were in the protected areas. The results have just been amazing.

Q:?How have the villages in the area adapted to the sanctuary?

A:?In the beginning, there were a lot of problems with the villagers not understanding the rangers' mission. The most important thing we did to get people behind us was to use Adat, or traditional Papuan village law. This was done by developing a close relationship with the ancestral village head, as he holds the power of the village and so people will listen to what he says. If we didn't have the village head, then it would have been difficult to enforce the rules of the sanctuary.

Q:?What's next for the rangers in the coming years?

A:?We all hope the ranger patrol can continue forever and that we have the resources to keep recruiting young people from the villages to the patrol. We now have three ranger stations built and we hope to have three rangers in every station with small, fuel-efficient boats that can be used to spot illegal fishermen and intercept them until support can show up.

The other big problem we'd like to fix is communication. Radio communication in this region of Raja Ampat is difficult because all the radios we have now are line-of-sight and the islands interfere with signal within short distances. The plan is to build a main radio/repeater station that will cover the entire area so that there is clear contact throughout the sanctuary.

Another miserable night in the dark for storm-hit Long Beach

LONG BEACH, New York (Reuters) - Parts of Long Beach, a seaside community on the southern shore of Long Island, were pitch black as darkness fell on Saturday night. The only light in entire neighborhoods emanated from the trucks of utility workers fixing power lines nearly two weeks after Superstorm Sandy devastated the region.

Residents of Long Beach, a city of about 33,000 on Long Island's southern barrier islands, share their fate with hundreds of thousands of people in devastated coastal communities facing a 13th night without power.

For many, that meant no hot water or heat in freezing nighttime temperatures.

Luis Mendez, 49, who works in a laundry in Long Beach, leaned against a car talking with a friend, Alison Cartanega, whose three children played in near-total darkness nearby.

"It's terrible," he said. "I saw a LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) guy fixing a line down the street today, and I went to ask him when the power was coming back on. He said December."

Local authorities say power has been restored to 80 percent of Long Beach. Water has been declared safe to drink but residents are being told to flush out their faucets for 10 to 15 minutes before drinking. The city's website instructs residents not to flush their toilets because the sewage plant is without power.

LIPA says it will restore power to 99 percent of its customers by Tuesday.

On Saturday afternoon, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo helped the National Guard unload truckloads of donated food, water, cleaning supplies and piles of clothes.

At a supermarket parking lot late on Saturday afternoon, hundreds of weary Long Beach residents met the incoming supply trucks.

New York National Guard members distributed thousands of MREs (meals ready to eat), cases of bottled water and six trucks worth of cleaning supplies donated by Home Depot, said Adam Amit, 24, a lieutenant with the NY National Guard's 69th Infantry Regiment.

'LIVE BY THE SUN'

But after the coming and going of dignitaries, press, and volunteers that has been repeated hundreds of times around the region, residents are again left to make do with the little they have.

"Out here, time doesn't mean anything anymore," said Miles Rose, 58, an information technology consultant from Long Beach. "You live by the sun, and when it goes down, the day is over and you go to bed. That's how we live now."

Rose has created a webpage on his computer, which he powers up with a car battery, using a solar cell and an inverter to switch the DC car battery to AC.

The site, www.freecycleplus.com/longbeach, allows neighbors to post what they need and those who wish to donate to post what they can offer.

The site also lists places where residents can get hot food and water, charge their cell phones at 'charging tables' set up by the city, and receive donated clothing.

Along Broadway, the road that runs along Long Beach's southern coast, the lashing storm stripped 200,000 cubic yards of sand from the beach and dumped it inland, said EJ Lamay, foreman of Lamay and Sons.

Lamay's Huntington, Long Island-based construction company was subcontracted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to clean up what Lamay says was as much as 3 feet (1 meter) of beach sand pushed into streets and backyards along Broadway.

Lamay said it took 91 men using 15 payloaders to move the sand from the streets back to the beach, where it is piled 10 stories high in a fenced-off area on Broadway. Lamay's crews worked around the clock for a week, then cut back to 12-hour shifts.

The crew huddled together beside the colossal pile of sand Saturday night, planning the final stages of cleanup. Lamay, a stocky construction worker with salt-and-pepper hair, barked orders to his employees.

"Day at the beach," he said when asked what it was like to move so much sand. The construction team burst into laughter. "Day at the beach," Lamay repeated. "No problem."

Bob Masucci, 55, a construction worker who lives in a six-story apartment building along Broadway, said about half of his neighbors stayed put during the storm.

"It was totally insane," he said. "We saw whitecaps in the street!"

HBT: Dodgers making strong pitch for Hunter

UPDATE: Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles reports that the Dodgers have approached Hunter about a two-year contract. Contrary to Ken Rosenthal?s report earlier this afternoon, Saxon is hearing that the Dodgers have made it clear to other teams that they would consider trading Andre Ethier.

1:23 PM: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Dodgers will not trade Ethier and that Hunter would have to accept a lesser role if he signs with the team.

One would think that Hunter would rather look for a full-time role elsewhere, but since the Dodgers don?t appear to have a budget right now, they could compete and exceed other offers in terms of dollars. Kemp and Crawford are both coming off surgeries, so there?s a chance Hunter could play pretty regularly to begin 2013, but he would be some mighty expensive insurance.

8:55 AM: What do you do when you already have three outfielders under contract with long-term deals? You try to sign another outfielder, of course.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Dodgers are ?aggressively pursuing? free agent outfielder Torii Hunter. This must be part of Ned Colletti?s strategy of signing all of the free agents in order to keep them away from potential rivals.

Nothing appears imminent, but Nightengale hears that the Dodgers have some organizational meetings on tap for next week in which they?ll try to formulate a plan to make room for both Hunter and a front-line starting pitcher. They have already spoken with the agents for Zack Greinke and Anibal Sanchez, who many consider the best two starters available in free agency.

The Dodgers have Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier locked into expensive long-term deals, so something will have to give if they want to sign Hunter. We heard a rumor last month that Ethier was on the trade block and this would seem to give some credence to that notion. Yes, it appears the Dodgers may already have a case of buyer?s remorse after signing the 30-year-old to a five-year, $85 million contract extension in June.

Will we ever understand how our brains work?

Laura Spinney, contributor

Kurzweil.jpg

(Image: David C. Ellis/Getty)

Several projects are trying to reverse-engineer the brain. In How to Create a Mind, futurist Ray Kurzweil champions their cause

WHEN it comes to the human brain, many scientists believe that we are incapable of understanding how it works because we lack the tools and intelligence to measure its mind-blowing complexity. Others are starting to question that notion, and to subtly redefine the task. In How to Create a Mind, futurist Ray Kurzweil has ridden into battle for the challengers.

how-to-create-a-mind.jpg

He starts by asking what it means to be complex. If you consider that a forest is made up of trees, each of whose branches is different, then you might conclude that the forest's complexity is impenetrable. But if you realise that the forest grows according to certain rules and contains repeating patterns, then the problem becomes tractable. You don't have to measure every last gnarly twig; you can make predictions instead. As Kurzweil says, you can reverse-engineer it.

All you need to get started are the rules, and an understanding of the basic neural building blocks whose configuration they guide. Neuroscientists noticed long ago that the structure of the brain's outer layer, the neocortex, is remarkably uniform, made up of repeating units, like transistors in a microchip. Estimates of what this basic unit might be vary - from a single neuron up to tens of thousands - but all are relevant as they are likely to fit into a hierarchy whose functions become increasingly complex and abstract as you move up it.

There are now a handful of efforts afoot to describe both the units and the rules, including the Human Brain Project at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, in which, in the interests of full disclosure, I should say my husband is involved. What they have in common is the idea that the brain is an integrated system, with properties that emerge only when its elements are combined.

This means that traditional neuroscientific research, which seeks to explain increasingly specialised aspects of brain function in isolation, may have limited scope. The reductionist approach has to be supplemented by a constructivist one - putting the pieces back together again to explain the whole. Modern tools, including supercomputers and the mathematics of complexity, make that possible.

You can see why, on learning about this new line of research, Kurzweil felt he had to write this book. For years he has been talking about what he calls the law of accelerating returns, according to which both biological and technological evolution are speeding up. In his 2005 book, The Singularity is Near, he argued that we are approaching a point where humans and machines will merge, producing a leap in intelligence. Reverse-engineering the human brain could open the door to all sorts of significant innovations, such as the design of a computer that thinks more like us. This could be the springboard from which to make that leap.

There is good evidence that neither biological nor technological evolution happens in the smoothly exponential way he says they do, and even that the blistering pace of technological progress of the last few centuries might be slowing. On the whole, though, this book is a breath of fresh air. Scientists tend to be cautious in their predictions - they certainly were about the Human Genome Project, which was completed in 15 years against all expectations - and Kurzweil makes an argument for optimism.

There are plenty of challenges ahead, not least because reverse-engineering the brain is only the first step. The result of that process will then have to forward-engineer itself - that is, learn. There are ethical concerns about what this new intelligence will be capable of, but for now at least they seem to be dwarfed by its promise, not least in helping us to understand and treat the rising tide of brain disease.

It is debatable whether this will happen as early as the 2020s, as Kurzweil predicts. But if, as seems increasingly clear, this is where the science must go, does it matter if he is off by a decade or two?

An iPhone case that shoots pepper spray

5 hrs.

There's no shortage of iPhone cases out there, but this one from Spraytect is one-of-a-kind: It has built-in pepper spray.

You read that correctly. The case, currently available for iPhone 4 and 4S, has a special loading mechanism and custom canisters, allowing anyone equipping it to enter self-defense mode in an instant.

The founder of Spraytect, Scott McPherson, thought of the idea as something "socially acceptable" his daughter could carry while alone in a strange city.

It's not exactly haute couture, though; The description of the case says the spray cartridge is "inconspicuously attached" to your phone, but the bump is in fact rather large. It's?even advertised as a "kickstand," allowing your phone to sit at an angle in portrait, or straight up in landscape mode.

The obvious question, considering how phones get manhandled and jostled in pockets and purses all day, is how do you prevent it from firing on accident, filling your eyes or your friends' with noxious military-grade mist?

First of all, after you load the canister, there's a safety pin that must be taken out. And then you must rotate the cap downwards to its "armed" position, indicated in bright yellow. Then you're free to hit the button and douse your attacker.

Ridiculous gadget, or useful accessory for wary city-dwellers? Either way, it really exists, and you can buy one for $40 in your choice of color ? but just the one flavor.

Scientists propose 20Gbps fibre broadband | IT PRO

New technology could boost internet speeds by two-thousand fold.

By Rene Millman, 7 Nov 2012 at 15:36

Scientists at Bangor University have developed a new technology that could boost internet speed over fibre by up to two thousand times that of average broadband connections.

The new system could deliver speeds of up to 20Gbps, compared with BT?s Infinity fibre broadband speeds of up to 40Mbps. Communications watchdog Ofcom estimates that the average UK broadband speed is around 9Mbps.

The researchers? project, dubbed Ocean, has looked at ways to increase the capacity of fibre optic connections. Professor Jianming Tang, of Bangor University?s School of Electronic Engineering, said that to make the great leap forward in broadband, a technology called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) had to be applied to optical connections.

?The technology, Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OOFDM), has unique and inherent advantages including, for example, the fastest transmission speed and highest cost-effectiveness compared to all existing technologies, great system flexibility and excellent performance robustness,? said Professor Tang.

OODFM is well understood and is currently used in copper-based ADSL networks to increase capacity. It is also used in digital television and 4G mobile broadband networks.

The university said that the OOFDM could be used in currently installed fibre networks without needing to replace hardware. It is leading a three-year project to develop commercially exploitable smart OOFDM modules and network prototypes, using low-cost off-the-shelf components.

The technology would also draw less power than other technologies.

?Compared to today?s commercially available broadband connections, the technology is expected to provide end-users with both downloading and uploading speeds up to 2,000 times faster than current speeds and with a guaranteed quality of services at a price that subscribers are currently paying for their current 20Mbps services, regardless of subscribers? home location,? said Professor Tang. ?Obviously, this will revolutionise communication technology.?

Bangor University is working with organisations including Fujitsu Semiconductors Europe, Finisar Israel, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and VPIsystems GmbH on the three-year, ?3 million project, which has been funded by the European Union.

The researchers have filed a number of patents covering the technology and hope to push to technology to speeds of up to 40Gbps in the future.

(AP Photo/Alexander F. Yuan)

(AP) ? China's ruling communists opened a pivotal congress to initiate a power handover by giving a nod to their revolutionary past and broadly promising cleaner government while keeping off-stage the main event ? the bargaining over seats in the new leadership.

All the main players were arrayed on the stage in the Great Hall of the People: President Hu Jintao, his successor Xi Jinping and a collection of retired party insiders. A golden hammer and sickle, the Communist Party's symbol, hung on the back wall. Yet in a nearly two-hour opening ceremony Thursday, scant mention was made of the transition or that in a week Hu will step down as party chief in favor of Xi in what would be only the second orderly transfer of power in 63 years of communist rule.

The congress is writ small the state of Chinese politics today. It's a largely ceremonial gathering of 2,200-plus delegates who meet while the real deal-making is done behind-the-scenes by the true power-holders.

The centerpiece event of the opening of the weeklong congress ? a 90-minute speech by Hu ? served politics, allowing him to define his legacy after a decade in office, while marshaling his clout to install his allies in the collective leadership that Xi will head.

"An important thing for him is to make sure that there's no critical, no negative summary judgment of the past 10 years," said Ding Xueliang, a Chinese politics expert at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Still, Ding said, "90 percent of the effort is on putting your people in place."

The party's public silence on a leadership transition that everyone knows is taking place and that politically minded Chinese have been discussing has deepened a palpable sense of public unease. Many Chinese feel the country is at a turning point, in need of new ideas to handle a slowing economy, growing piles of debt and rising public demands for more accountable, transparent government, if not democracy.

In signs of the public disquiet, at least five ethnic Tibetans in western China set themselves on fire Wednesday or Thursday in protests against Chinese rule of Tibetan areas, according to overseas Tibet support groups and the Tibetan government-in-exile in India.

At dawn in Tiananmen Square, next to the congress venue, a woman in her 30s threw pieces of torn paper into the air and shouted "bandits and robbers!" ? a curse often leveled at corrupt local officials. She was taken away by the security forces, which have smothered all of Beijing for the congress.

In his speech, Hu cited many of the challenges China faces ? a rich-poor gap, environmentally ruinous growth and imbalanced development between prosperous cities and a struggling countryside. Yet he offered little fresh thinking to address them and said restoring a relatively high growth would be the best way to deal with public expectations.

Only on tackling rampant corruption did Hu sound the alarm. He called on party members to be ethical and rein in their family members whose often showy displays of wealth have stoked public anger.

"Nobody is above the law," Hu said to the applause of the 2,309 delegates and invited guests, with Xi and other party notables on the dais behind him. He later said, "If we fail to handle this issue well, it could prove fatal to the party, and even cause the collapse of the party and the fall of the state."

Always an occasion for divisive bargaining, the leadership transition has been made more fraught by scandals that have fueled already high public cynicism that Chinese leaders are more concerned with power and wealth than government.

In recent months, one top leader, Bo Xilai, has been purged after his wife murdered a British businessman; a top aide to Hu was sidelined after his son crashed a Ferrari he shouldn't have been able to afford and foreign media reported that relatives of Xi and outgoing Premier Wen Jiabao had traded on their proximity to power to amass vast fortunes.

Public image aside, the scandals have especially weakened Hu, on whose watch they occurred, in the power-broking over the next leadership. In recent decades, the leadership line-ups have sought to balance different factions within the party. Who has prevailed won't be apparent until next Thursday, a day after the congress, when the members of the Politburo Standing Committee appear before the media.

On stage with Hu appeared one of his nemeses, his predecessor Jiang Zemin, who has supported Xi and is angling to fill many of the seats in the leadership with his allies. Nearby, dressed in a Mao jacket, sat 95-year-old Song Ping, a veteran of the revolution and party insider who was Hu's earliest political mentor.

Hu drew the line on political reform, a catchphrase for everything from greater transparency to democracy, even though retired party members, media commentators and government think tanks have called it an urgent need.

Hu's signature policy ? a grab-bag of ideas meant to promote more balanced growth and stronger party rule that goes under the clunky phrase "the Scientific Outlook on Development" ? has already been adopted in the party constitution. Hu's report to the congress called it "a powerful theoretical weapon" to guide the party.

"Even though this congress is about rejuvenation, passing the power to the young, what we see is the opposite," said Willy Lam of Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Oil prices rose above $85 per barrel on Thursday as postelection volatility continued.

Crude oil rose 65 cents to close at $85.09 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That followed a decline of 5 percent on Wednesday, when traders were spooked by worries about budget negotiations in the U.S. Analysts also say that oil supplies and production are high, which tends to drive down prices.

Oil analyst Jim Ritterbusch wrote in a note that he expects this week's price volatility to subside, but there's still a bias toward new lows. The U.S. has large inventories of oil and production is at 17-year highs, he wrote.

AAA said gasoline prices at the pump rose a fraction of a penny to $3.464 per gallon.

In other trading, Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, gained 51 cents to $107.33 per barrel in London.

In other futures trading in New York:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 1.84 cents to $2.6073 per gallon.

? Heating oil fell 0.67 cent to $2.9554 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 3 cents to $3.608 per 1,000 cubic feet. The government said supplies rose less than analysts had expected, but inventories are still 6.6 percent above the five-year average for this time of year.

Duckworth wins Illinois House seat over Tea Party incumbent

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Democrat Tammy Duckworth, a decorated Iraq War veteran who headed President Barack Obama's Department of Veteran Affairs, beat incumbent Republican Joe Walsh for an Illinois congressional seat on Tuesday.

Walsh stirred controversy last month with a suggestion that abortion is never necessary to save the life of a mother. Walsh was one of three Republican congressional candidates this election season whose chances were harmed by controversial remarks about abortion.

Backed by the Tea Party movement, Walsh was elected in 2010 by just 292 votes and joined a class of first-term Republicans whose resistance to compromise was a hallmark of a dysfunctional Congress.

Although Republicans will retain the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrats made gains in Illinois, also defeating incumbent Republican, Judy Biggert, in another Chicago suburban district.

Democrat Bill Foster defeated Biggert in a district that was redrawn to favor Democrats after the 2010 census. A third hotly contested suburban race, between Democrat Brad Schneider and incumbent Republican Robert Dold, was too close to call.

In Illinois, Democrats began the election year determined to reverse a Republican gain of four U.S. House seats in 2010. The powerful Illinois state house speaker, Michael Madigan, used Democratic power in state government to redraw election districts in a way that would help Democratic candidates.

Duckworth, who was featured at the Democratic National Convention, opened up a double-digit lead after Walsh said on October 18 that abortion was never necessary to save a woman's life. The congressman later softened his remarks, which were criticized by medical experts, to say such instances were "extremely rare."

Walsh's remarks came two months after a statement by Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin that women have biological defenses against pregnancy in the case of "legitimate rape." Also, Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said October 23 that a pregnancy resulting from rape was "something God intended to happen." Both Akin and Mourdock lost Tuesday to Democrats.

Duckworth, 44, who lost both legs and part of her right arm in Iraq, had previously run unsuccessfully for Congress in 2010.
