Xbox To Reveal ?A New Generation? Of Game Console May 21 At ...

Microsoft has just sent out a round of invites to the press to attend a special event at its Redmond, Washington campus on May 21 at 10 AM PT. The event is associated with the hashtag #XboxReveal, and promises to show off a ?new generation? of Xbox, so it?s safe to say we?ll get our first glimpse of Microsoft?s next-generation home gaming console at the event.

This follows earlier reports that indicated we?d see Microsoft launch the Xbox at an event in late May, ahead of a full preview at E3 in June. The event will be live streamed via Xbox.com and Xbox LIVE, and also on TV via Spike TV for viewers in the U.S. and Canada, according to a blog post from Microsoft?s Larry ?Major Nelson? Hyrb. The event will be a first glimpse at Xbox?s next-gen console, and will be followed up by a more extensive look at software at E3 19 days after the initial reveal.

A late-May Xbox event was originally pegged by Windows expert Paul Thurrot (who specified May 21, in fact) and later confirmed by The Verge?s Tom Warren. It?s unclear what exactly will be on the agenda, but Microsoft?s Hyrb previously ribbed Sony for not showing any hardware at its own PlayStation 4 reveal earlier this year, so we?ll probably get eyes on the console itself.

We may also get our first official word on speculation that Microsoft?s next Xbox will require an always-on connection to the Internet to function, and a more detailed explanation of how exactly it will interact with other living room entertainment devices like cable set-top boxes.

5 Big Brand PPC Ads with Critiques: What We Like, What We'd ...

What big brands are able to do with their enormous marketing budgets is inspiring ? though sometimes it mostly inspires jealousy. The typical small business can?t sponsor the Olympics or get an ad spot during the Super Bowl. You have to tinker around with more accessible campaigns that cost less but typically have smaller reach as well.

PPC is an example of an incredibly accessible marketing channel ? it?s being exploited by tiny one-man shops and huge multinational corporations alike. But how much better is a big-brand PPC ad than an SMB ad ? if at all? Is it like comparing the latest Pepsi commercial to what your local furniture store puts together?

Let?s look at five big-brand AdWords ads and see what they do well and what they could do better.

(More: Dear eBay, Your Ads Don't Work Because They Suck)

By the way, I fully admit to stealing the format for this post from Oli Gardner at Unbounce, who recently did something similar with big-brand landing pages. Thanks, Oli!

Big-Brand PPC Ad #1: LightingDirect.com

PPC Ad Example

A Google search for ?chandeliers? turned up these three ads in the coveted top-of-page ad spots. Let?s focus on the middle ad from LightingDirect.com (a Build.com network site), comparing it to its close competition.

What I Like:

  • Seller Ratings ? Both LightingDirect.com and LampsPlus are making use of the seller ratings extension available in AdWords. This helps them stand out a little more from the top-ranked ad. It?s working to the second ad?s advantage in particular because the company has over twice as many reviews as the third ad.
  • Lots of Benefits ? This ad manages to pack four different benefits (free shipping, easy returns, great selection, and friendly service) into a small amount of space. The other two ads only include two benefits in their message.

What I?d Change/Test:

  • Punctuation ? Putting punctuation at the end of the first line of descriptive text (a comma or period after ?Easy Returns?) would have made this ad easier to read, since top-ranked ads often find their two description lines expanded into a single long line. They could probably also increase CTR by including an exclamation point.
  • Call to Action ? There?s no explicit call to action in this ad. (The first ad makes the same mistake; the third ad has the ?Subscribe to newsletter? button to entice an action.) I might try losing one of those four benefits and turning one of the benefits into a CTA ? for example, ?Claim Your Free Shipping Offer? or ?Check Out Our Great Selection.?

Big-Brand PPC Ad #2: Audi

Brand Search PPC Ad

Unsurprisingly, Audi owns the top spot for a search on ?Audi.? (And yes, we think even small businesses should bid on branded terms.) So what are they doing with the prime real estate?

What I Like:

  • Sitelinks ? Sitelinks are an easy win: They make your ad bigger and give users many more places to click. In fact they increase CTR even when users aren't clicking the sitelines themselves, meaning you get a lift on the main headline link too.
  • Verbs ? Audi isn?t missing a call to action like LightingDirect was ? in fact, the main description line as well as every single sitelink includes a verb, enticing the searcher to take action.
  • Social Extensions ? Audi has an insane number of followers on Google+, so they?re right to show that number off. (According to Google: ?On average, search ads with annotations have a 5-10% uplift in click through rate and the AdWords Social Extension helps you show more of them.?)

What I?d Change/Test:

  • Headline ? Since this is the top result on a brand search, it probably has a super-duper high CTR, but nonetheless, I think the headline could be doing more work. All it really tells us is that this is the official site. Compare to this BMW ad that also tells us we can use the official site to build our own car.

Top Ranked PPC Ad

Big-Brand PPC Ad #3: Olay

Branded AdWords Ad

I know some of you dudes out there are thinking ?What the %^&$ is BB cream?? Basically, it?s like gussied up tinted moisturizer ? which is like a sheer foundation ? never mind. The point is, it?s makeup, and you can buy it. Let?s take a look at the Olay ad and the other competition in the yellow box.

What I Like:

  • Use of Symbols ? Did you know that using symbols, like the registered trademark symbol, can boost your ad performance? Test this now! They?re also using that powerful exclamation point.
  • Offers ? I like the specific offers in the sitelinks, especially ?Get a Free Skin Consultation,? which sounds like a great lead builder.

What I?d Change/Test:

  • Shorter Headline ? The headline is too long so it gets truncated. Instantly what? We don?t know.
  • Longer Description ? On the other hand, the description line is throwing away its extra characters, space that could have been used for a call to action (Maybelline?s CTA in the third ad is awesome) or to repeat the keyword (?BB Cream?) in the text again. Remember, when the search query appears in your ad, it appears in bold face, so your ad stands out more.

Big-Brand PPC Ad #4: ULINE

Bad PPC Ads

ULINE is one of the top PPC spenders in the business and industrial category, spending over $35 million a year on AdWords advertising. Are they making the most of that big PPC budget?

What I Like:

???? <crickets> ????

I don?t like much about this ad. Let?s get to what I don?t like.

What I?d Change/Test:

  • Better Keyword Matching ? It looks like they?re broad-matching on ?labels,? but they?re not using dynamic keyword insertion (DKI), so the word ?printing? doesn?t actually appear in the ad ? not a great intent match. The ad is all about designing and customizing labels, not printing them. They should be keeping a better watch over their search query report and building out more targeted ad groups.
  • More Benefits ? The only benefit here is ?Over 27,500 Products? ? which, some might argue, is actually a shortcoming. Who wants to search through nearly 30,000 products? Paradox of choice, anyone? Sounds like a waste of time. Compare this to the other two ads, which offer lots of information on price and specific details about label sizes and other information that would help the searcher make a decision.
  • Ad Extensions ? ULINE?s ad doesn?t make use of any extensions at all. Can we get a sitelink up in this piece?

Since ULINE?s ad is relatively weak compared to the #2 and #3 ads, they?re probably bidding higher and paying a lot more than their competitors per click.

Big-Brand PPC Ad #5: SelectQuote

PPC Ad Text Help

Here?s an ad that follows a lot of the best practices we?ve already mentioned ? clear call to action, using the search query in the text, sitelinks, etc. What are they doing that?s new?

What I Like:

  • The Local Connection ? SelectQuote has localized their ad to recognize my location. I?m in Colorado, so I might want to deal with a local agent.
  • Communication Extension ? Including a phone number means that your ad could lead to conversions even if they don?t click the ad. (That means it?s free, yay!)

What I?d Change/Test:

  • Numbers ? The top-ranked Metlife ad gets specific with numbers: ?Pay as little as $1/day for up to $500,000 coverage.? If I were SelectQuote?s PPC manager I?d test out concrete dollar amounts in my text too.
  • Appeal to Emotions ? People looking for life insurance might be driven by some strong emotions ? fear, compassion, concern for one?s loved ones, etc. An ad that speaks to those emotions could really do well here. I?d test something like ?Take Care of Your Family. Get a Free Quote Today.?

Do you steal from the big boys when it comes to writing ad text? Or do the little guys do it better?

Mysterious hot spots observed in cool red supergiant

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Astronomers have released a new image of the outer atmosphere of Betelgeuse -- one of the nearest red supergiants to Earth -- revealing the detailed structure of the matter being thrown off the star.

The new image, taken by the e-MERLIN radio telescope array operated from the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, also shows regions of surprisingly hot gas in the star's outer atmosphere and a cooler arc of gas weighing almost as much as the Earth.

Betelgeuse is easily visible to the unaided eye as the bright, red star on the shoulder of Orion the Hunter. The star itself is huge -- 1,000 times larger than our Sun -- but at a distance of about 650 light years it still appears as a tiny dot in the sky, so special techniques combining telescopes in arrays are required to see details of the star and the region around it.

The new e-MERLIN image of Betelgeuse -- published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, shows its atmosphere extends out to five times the size of the visual surface of the star. It reveals two hot spots within the outer atmosphere and a faint arc of cool gas even farther out beyond the radio surface of the star.

The hot spots are separated by roughly half the visual diameter of the star and have a temperature of about 4,000-5,000 Kelvin, much higher than the average temperature of the radio surface of the star (about 1,200 Kelvin) and even higher than the visual surface (3,600 Kelvin). The arc of cool gas lies almost 7.4 billion kilometres away from the star -- about the same distance as the farthest Pluto gets from the Sun. It is estimated to have a mass almost two thirds that of the Earth and a temperature of about 150 Kelvin.

Lead author Dr Anita Richards, from The University of Manchester, said that it was not yet clear why the hot spots are so hot. She said: "One possibility is that shock waves, caused either by the star pulsating or by convection in its outer layers, are compressing and heating the gas. Another is that the outer atmosphere is patchy and we are seeing through to hotter regions within. The arc of cool gas is thought to be the result of a period of increased mass loss from the star at some point in the last century but its relationship to structures like the hot spots, which lie much closer in, within the star's outer atmosphere, is unknown."

The mechanism by which supergiant stars like Betelgeuse lose matter into space is not well understood despite its key role in the lifecycle of matter, enriching the interstellar material from which future stars and planets will form. Detailed high-resolution studies of the regions around massive stars like the ones presented here are essential to improving our understanding.

Dr Richards, who is based in Manchester's School of Physics and Astronomy, added: "Betelgeuse produces a wind equivalent to losing the mass of the Earth every three years, enriched with the chemicals that will go into the next generation of star and planet formation. The full detail of how these cool, evolved stars launch their winds is one of the remaining big questions in stellar astronomy.

"This is the first direct image showing hot spots so far from the centre of the star. We are continuing radio and microwave observations to help decide which mechanisms are most important in driving the stellar wind and producing these hot spots. This won't just tell us how the elements that form the building blocks of life are being returned to space, it will also help determine how long it is before Betelgeuse explodes as a supernova."

Future observations planned with e-MERLIN and other arrays, including ALMA and VLA, will test whether the hotspots vary in concert due to pulsation, or show more complex variability due to convection. If it is possible to measure a rotation speed this will identify in which layer of the star they originate.

How to Take Advantage of Article Directories for Internet Marketing ...

Businesses have been taking advantage of online directories as marketing platforms for some time now, but a new development in this field has expanded the potential of directory submission. Article directories are a newer development in the blogging world, and they offer both businesses and individuals a great opportunity for internet advertising. However, many webmasters don?t know how to take advantage of this new opportunity.

Blogging is one of the best ways to help build traffic and generate exposure for your website. Whether it?s business or personal, a blog is a great promotional platform. Search engine indexing is strengthened by regular updates full of relevant content, making blog articles some of the best available tools for improving search engine optimization. Article directories combine the SEO benefits of blogging with the increased exposure that comes from directory submission to give you a whole new internet marketing platform for their websites.

Article directories are websites that accept article submissions from writers all over the web for publication on their pages. The writers are not paid by the directory, and there is typically no charge for uploading articles to the directory. Both you and the directories reap their benefits from secondary sources; the directory gets to increase traffic by keeping its pages stocked with relevant and highly searched content. As the writer, on the other hand, you get a free place to publish articles. The potential for writers to use this as a marketing platform makes it a kind of symbiotic relationship.

For example, any business owner could write and publish an article about their own business, generating tons of exposure through the article directory?s traffic. Whatever industry you call home has tons of potential for article writing. If you?re operating a web design service, for example, you could write an interesting article about recent trends in web design and the importance of professional design for businesses. You could include links to your own website and drop the name of your business to increase exposure and lead new traffic to your own pages. The potential for marketing on a platform like this is huge, almost too great to resist.

If you already run a blog for your website, then you already know the importance and benefits of generating fresh content. New and interesting articles keeps your audience engaged and captivated, turning casual viewers into loyal readers. Every mention of your business or website on an article directory is a new opportunity for bringing in readers. If your website is too young to get the exposure it needs, article directories can be a great help in growing your traffic and readership. Always remember to stay relevant and engaging, and your articles will bring new readers in droves.

When you get right down to it, article directories are free advertising. When you can fill some of your marketing needs for free, you can allocate your funds to other pursuits, like securing ad space or listing with a paid?property directory. Enjoy huge potential benefits from this new development in online directories, and put your website on top.

PFT: Chiefs, Dolphins reportedly still talking Albert

PeadGetty Images

As this year?s crop of incoming players, especially those taken in the first two rounds, celebrate their new circumstances, they need to keep one thing in mind.

Several months from now, there?s a chance they will think those circumstances stink.

Rams running back Isaiah Pead fell right into that category last season, despite being the 50th overall pick in the 2012 draft.? Presumed to be the heir apparent to Steven Jackson, Pead became largely forgotten last year, sliding behind seventh-rounder Daryl Richardson.

?Honestly, I would call it miserable,? Pead said of his rookie season, via the University of Cincinnati official website. ?Miserable life.? Miserable four-five months.?

When the season finally ended, Pead packed up and left.

?I took off and I didn?t come back until it was time to,? Pead said.? ?I just wanted to stay out of this area, I came back for a couple days to pack up then all the memories and walking back into my house by myself, had a couple days by myself, I just needed to get out of that area.?

Pead is partially responsible for his misery.? He didn?t deal well with being demoted behind a guy taken 202 spots later, showing up late for a pair of meetings.

?I was literally fed up with football,? Pead said.? ?Not a quitter, not quitting, I was just tired of football.? Tired of practice for the day and I would just lay there play video games and whatnot because it was so miserable, so stressful.?

With a fresh opportunity coming from the departure of Jackson, Pead is ready to turn the page.

?Whole new era, whole new attitude, whole new team, whole new Pead,? Pead said. ??I?m not going to sit and linger on something, but I am one to not forget about a situation.? I am moving on from last year, last year is last year, but I have not forgot about last year.? I wouldn?t call it revenge, but the chip that I put on my shoulder is just a little bigger.?

He needs to perform more than a little better to erase the head start that Richardson earned in 2012.? While Pead finished with 10 carries for 54 yards, Richardson had 98 carries for 475 yards.

Pead also needs to hope the Rams don?t use one of their high draft picks on a rookie who?ll get a chance to in 2013 that which Pead couldn?t in 2012.

John Galliano to teach master class at NY fashion school

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Disgraced fashion designer John Galliano is continuing his public image rehabilitation with an upcoming stint teaching a master class at one of New York's leading design schools.

Galliano, who was fired by Dior in 2011 after he was caught on camera making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris cafe, will teach a course titled "Show Me Emotion" at Parsons The New School For Design, the school said on Monday.

Parsons said the class "will be a dynamic and intimate opportunity for our students to learn from an immensely talented designer."

"We believe that over the past two years Galliano has demonstrated a serious intent to make amends for his past actions," the school added.

Earlier this year, the 52-year-old British designer, widely thought of as one of the most talented and creative names in fashion, spent several weeks working at Oscar de la Renta's studio in New York, preparing for de la Renta's New York Fashion Week show in February.

A French court handed out a 6,000-euro ($8,000) suspended fine to Galliano in 2011 after he was found guilty of anti-Semitic behavior. Galliano has said an addiction to drugs and alcohol had left him out of control and he was determined to make amends.

Parsons said students in the master class "will have the opportunity to engage in a frank conversation with Mr. Galliano about the challenges and complications of leading a design house in the 21st century."

Following his Dior dismissal, Galliano designed British model Kate Moss's wedding dress.

9 Materials That Will Change the Future of Manufacturing [Slide Show]

Researchers are developing cutting-edge foams, coatings, metals and other substances to make our homes, vehicles and gadgets more energy efficient and environmentally friendly

The future of manufacturing depends on a number of technological breakthroughs in robotics, sensors and high-performance computing, to name a few. But nothing will impact how things are made, and what they are capable of, more than the materials manufacturers use to make those things. New materials change both the manufacturing process and the end result.

Scientific American?s May special report ?How to Make the Next Big Thing? presents several new materials under development to help inventors and engineers deliver next-generation technologies. These ingredients include superinsulating aerogels for spacesuits, flexible concrete cloth for construction projects and complex natural polymers that could replace toxic plastics.

Yet this lineup of advanced materials merely scratches the surface. Carmakers, for example, are developing porous polymers and new steel alloys that are stronger and lighter than steel, ostensibly making vehicles both safer and more fuel efficient. And environmentally savvy entrepreneurs are growing fungi-based packing materials to provide a biodegradable alternative to Styrofoam.

The following slide show presents these and several other substances that manufacturers could someday us to make many of the things we use.

Revis enjoyed time as?Jet? |? No other teams pursued

Darrelle_RevisGetty Images

Last week, when the Jets pressed ?pause? on the Darrelle Revis trade talks, some thought that another team or two could try to jump into the fray.

It didn?t happen.

In fact, it never happened.? Per a source with knowledge of the process, it was always Tampa ? and only Tampa.

That reality kept the Jets from getting more than a first-round pick in 2013 and a fourth-round pick in 2014 (which will become a third-round pick if he?s on the Tampa Bay offseason roster next year).? It also kept Revis from getting anything more finite than a pay-as-you-go contract that promises him annual compensation of $16 million, with nothing guaranteed.

In the end, it was the best deal the Jets and Revis could get, because it was the only deal they could get.

?If we had the luxury of time, if we had the luxury of Darrelle not having been injured, not having gone through rehab, then I think things would be a lot clearer both from our standpoint and in the case of potential trade suitors,? G.M. John Idzik told reporters on Sunday.

He?s right.? Only one team was willing to give up a first-round pick plus a 2014 selection for the hope that Revis will be back to his old self after ACL replacement.? Only one team was willing to commit $16 million to him for 2013.? (Though it?s not actually guaranteed, there?s no way he?ll be cut before Week One, when his $13 million base salary becomes guaranteed as a practical matter by the labor deal.)

Perhaps most importantly, only one team was willing to do a deal that, if Revis goes back to being Revis, will necessitate an adjustment or risk his third career holdout.

The thinking was that the next contract for Revis would have to carry enough guaranteed money to make him or his agents never complain again about his compensation.? The Bucs instead have created a situation in which it?s highly unlikely that both sides consistently will be content with Revis earning total compensation that equates to $1 million per game.

If he plays poorly, the Buccaneers eventually will have to explore paying him less, or possibly moving on.? If he plays well, the Bucs will have to brace for Revis wanting more.

Still, after blowing a first-round pick in 2008 on Aqib Talib and a third-round pick in 2010 on Myron Lewis, the Bucs will now gamble those same two picks on the chance that Revis will get back to form.? If he does, and if he wants more money because of that, it?ll be a very good problem for the Buccaneers to have.

Long Island News - Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims Leads ...

A.G. Schneiderman, D.A. Vance, Other Law Enforcement Officials, Advocates And Community Members Gather To Commemorate National Crime Victims? Rights Week; Speakers And Victims Reflect On The Theme ?New Challenges; New Solutions?

(NEW YORK) ? The Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr today hosted the 28th Annual Crime Victims Candlelight Vigil. The Annual Vigil brings together law enforcement officials, victim advocates, community leaders and members to commemorate National Crime Victims? Rights Week. Reflecting on the theme ?New Challenges; New Solutions,? speakers included A.G. Schneiderman, D.A. Vance, New York City Department of Corrections Commissioner Dora Schiro, New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Executive Deputy Commissioner Michael C. Green, and crime survivors expressing the shared mission to end violence and deliver justice for its victims. The Vigil took on special poignancy this year in the wake of the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut last December, and the bombing of the Boston Marathon just days before.

?We are proud to partner with so many leading voices at our annual NYC Crime Victims? Ceremony and Candle Light Vigil,? said Susan Xenarios, co-Chair of the Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims. ?This is an opportunity for all New Yorkers to share a moving and healing event together as we honor and commemorate National Crime Victims? Rights Week.?

?In our work to achieve a safer and fairer society, we must honor and learn from those who have suffered most at the hands of injustice,? said Attorney General Schneiderman, whose office co-sponsored the vigil. ?As we begin National Crime Victims? Rights Week, let us remember the lost, celebrate survivors? strength, and redouble our efforts to keep communities safe. For those of us in law enforcement, we also honor those who have been lost by reaffirming our solemn commitment that we will do everything in our power to ensure public safety in every community.?

?This important annual event promotes awareness about those who suffer from violence and those who have been silenced by it,? said District Attorney Vance. ?By coming together to honor this event, we renew our commitment to serving our communities and remembering those who have been affected by crime.?

The Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims Annual Vigil is a forum for community members to share insights, engage in problem-solving strategies and speak as a united voice on behalf of the all victims of crime and violence in New York State. This year?s theme, ?Honoring Our Journey,? inspires reflection on the victims we have lost, the survivors we celebrate, and our collective work to promote justice in our society.

The Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims provides a comprehensive range of direct services and advocacy for victims of violence and other crimes, their families and the communities in which they reside. The Coalition?s mission is to inform and educate members and the public about current developments in legislation, our criminal justice and law enforcement systems, victim service and trauma treatment modalities and resources which impact on services and justice for victims and the crime victim movement on a local, state and national level.

'Dexter' Spinoff Focused On Deb: Showtime Boss David Nevins 'Won't Rule It Out'

"Dexter's" eighth season will be its last, but that doesn't mean that we're definitively leaving the show's universe for good.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins confirmed that while "there's nothing actively happening" in terms of a spinoff centered on Dexter's sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), "I won't rule it out."

He continued, "This is a core franchise to us and all options are on the table as to where it could go after this ... We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there."

Nevins also told THR that the theme of "change" would be a driving force in the final season: "The consequences are already starting to hit him. It's jeopardized his most important relationship on Earth, which is with his sister; his other relationships on the show will be touched this year and he's still changing ... 'Dexter' changed its formula last year and will change again this year -- there's a lot of different things in play. Part of what you need to do in a finale is start bringing some of the different threads together: his sister, his son, his love life, his professional life and his childhood trauma."

Showtime announced that Season 8 would be "Dexter's" final year earlier this week, but the news was a long time coming, with everyone from executive producer Sara Colleton to CBS CEO Les Moonves admitting that the creative team has been planning this season as the show's endgame.

"We wanted to end it [after Season 7], but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years," Colleton told TV Guide last June, before Season 7 premiered. "In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender. We have worked that out and know where it's going to end. Next year will definitely be the last year of 'Dexter.' Absolutely."

In preparation for "Dexter's" final season, Showtime has released a two-minute preview, which you can view below:

United in adversity: West, Texas, prays for Boston, which sends pizzas to West

As refugees in West, Texas waited to return to homes devastated by a massive explosion at a fertilizer plant, their talk, concern, and prayers turned to the terrorist attack in Boston. 'I've never been to Boston,' one Texan commented, 'but now I really want to go. It seems like a cool city.'

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / April 20, 2013

West, Texas, mayor pro tem Steve Vanek talks to the media in front of city hall Saturday, three days after an explosion at a fertilizer plant Wednesday night killed as many as 14 people and injured more than 160.

Lauretta Cvikel has her own problems. On Wednesday, she was knocked over by the explosion at West Fertilizer Plant, noting, "I never thought I'd be able see air move!" For another 20 minutes "that felt like forever" she didn't know the whereabouts of her pre-teen son, Allen, who was eventually found safe.

But as Ms. Cvikel tells her dramatic story, her thoughts suddenly wander eastward and to the North, to a manhunt and citywide lock down in Boston, which ended several hours later. Even as West continued to tally its casualties and homeless residents wandered around in their trucks, she noted, "I can't imagine what people in Boston are going through. We've been praying for them too."

Such reciprocal sympathies toward the end of inarguably the worst week of the year ? terror bombs, ricin letters, rural explosions, shootouts and manhunts ? also rubbed off on President Obama, who took a few minutes during his remarks on the capture of the Boston bomb suspect to mention the residents of West, Texas, saying, "We've also seen a tight-knit community in Texas devastated by a terrible explosion."

The phenomenon was in many ways natural: Victims of circumstance and tragedy easily empathize with others going through hard times. But it also pointed to a unique sense of national solidarity wrought by chaos and resolved by a sense of hope. "We are only beginning to make sense of a series of events that moved so fast, so furiously as to almost defy attempts to figure them out," explains Jesse Washington of the Washington Post.

Some here in West wondered how CNN's Anderson Cooper could have materialized in Boston only hours after leaving West, but there was little bitterness about the drift in national attention. If anything, residents of central Texas cheered the capture of the surviving bomb suspect because it buoyed their spirits as much as those of the applauding crowds on the streets of Watertown, clapping as police drove through.

Texas State Trooper Bryan Washko toured what he called "war zone" devastation early Friday before setting up a road block into a neighborhood knocked over by the Wednesday night explosion.

Strong quake jolts China's Sichuan, killing 160

YA'AN, China (AP) ? Residents awoke Sunday after spending the night outdoors or in their cars in a town near the epicenter of a powerful earthquake that struck the steep hills of China's southwestern Sichuan province, leaving at least 160 people dead and more than 6,700 injured.

The earthquake Saturday morning triggered landslides and disrupted phone and power connections in mountainous Lushan county five years after a devastating quake wreaked widespread damage across the region.

The village of Longmen was hit particularly hard, with authorities saying nearly all the buildings there had been destroyed in a frightening minute-long shaking by the quake.

In nearby Ya'an town, where aftershocks were felt nearly a day after the quake, residents sat in groups outside convenience stores watching the news on television sets. Fourteen-year-old Wang Xing sat with her family on chairs by the roadside in the cool night air, a large blanket on her lap.

Wang and her relatives decided to spend the night in their cars. "We don't feel safe sleeping at home tonight," said Wang, a student. She said the quake left tears on the walls of her family's house. "It was very scary when it happened. I ran out of my bed and out of the house. I didn't even have my shoes on."

Along the main roads leading to the worst-hit county of Lushan, ambulances, fire engines and military trucks piled high with supplies waited in long lines, some turning back to try other routes when roads were impassable.

Rescuers were forced to dynamite boulders that had fallen across roads to reach Longmen and other damaged areas lying farther up the mountain valleys, state media reported.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived Saturday afternoon by helicopter in Ya'an to direct rescue efforts, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

"The current priority is to save lives," Li said, after visiting hospitals, tents and climbing on a pile of rubble to view the devastation, according to Xinhua.

The China Earthquake Administration said at least 160 people had died, and more than 6,700 were injured. At least 96 people were killed in Lushan, and in the jurisdiction of Ya'an, which administers Lushan, 19 people were reported missing, the administration said.

The quake ? measured by the earthquake administration at magnitude-7.0 and by the U.S. Geological Survey at 6.6 ? struck the steep hills of Lushan county shortly after 8 a.m., when many people were at home, sleeping or having breakfast.

The quake's shallow depth, less than 13 kilometers (8 miles), likely magnified the impact.

Lushan, 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of the provincial capital of Chengdu, reported the most deaths, but there was concern that casualties in neighboring Baoxing county might have been under-reported because roads were blocked and power and phone services cut off.

It rained Saturday night, slowing rescue work, with forecasts predicting more rain in the next several days. The China Meteorological Administration warned of possible landslides and other geological disasters.

Tens of thousands of people moved into tents or cars, unable to return home or too afraid to go back as aftershocks continued to jolt the region.

Lushan, where the quake struck, lies where the fertile Sichuan plain meets foothills that eventually rise to the Tibetan plateau and sits atop the Longmenshan fault.

It was along that fault line that a devastating magnitude-7.9 quake struck on May 12, 2008, leaving more than 90,000 people dead or missing and presumed dead in one of the worst natural disasters to strike China in recent decades.

"It was just like May 12," Liu Xi, a writer in Ya'an city, said via a private message on his account on the Twitter-like Weibo service. "All the home decorations fell at once, and the old house cracked."

The official Xinhua News Agency said the well-known Bifengxia panda preserve, which is near Lushan, was not affected by the quake. Dozens of pandas were moved to Bifengxia from another preserve, Wolong, after its habitat was wrecked by the 2008 quake.

As in most natural disasters, the government mobilized thousands of soldiers and others, sending excavators and other heavy machinery as well as tents, blankets and other emergency supplies. Two soldiers died after their vehicle slide off a road and rolled down a cliff, state media reported.

The Chinese Red Cross said it had deployed relief teams with supplies of food, water, medicine and rescue equipment to the disaster areas.

Aerial photos released by the military and shown on state television showed individual houses in ruins in Lushan and outlying villages flattened into rubble. The roofs of some taller buildings appeared to have slipped off, exposing the floors beneath them.

The earthquake administration said there had been at least 712 aftershocks, including two of magnitude-5.0 or higher.

"It's too dangerous," said a person with the Weibo account Chengduxinglin and with a Lushan geotag. "Even the aftershocks are scary."

While rescuers and state media rushed to the disaster scene, China's active social media users filled the information gap. They posted photos of people fleeing to streets for safety and of buildings flattened by the quake. They shared information on the availability of phone services, apparently through data services.

Texas town honours blast victims

Initial reports put the deaths in the explosion in West on Wednesday as high as 15, although the authorities have refused to give any estimate. More than 160 people were hurt.

Several hundred people packed St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in the Texas town.

A victim relief services chaplain said the prayers and hymns honoured the members of the emergency services who rushed towards the danger of the plant fire that led to the blast, as well as those who were too close to the site when the explosion erupted. Hundreds of white candles were distributed in the pews for a candlelight tribute.

Meanwhile, rescuers were searching the smoking remnants of the farm town for survivors. They were checking destroyed houses and flats for anyone still trapped in debris.

A breathtaking band of destruction extended for a wide area around the West Fertiliser Co. The blast shook the ground with the strength of a small earthquake and crumpled dozens of homes, an apartment complex, a school and a nursing home. Its dull boom could be heard dozens of miles away.

Waco police Sgt William Swanton described search-and-rescue efforts as "tedious and time-consuming," noting that crews had to shore up much of the wreckage before going in.

There was no indication that the blast, which sent up a mushroom-shaped plume of smoke and left behind a crater, was anything other than an industrial accident, he said. The explosion was apparently touched off by a fire, but there was no indication what sparked the blaze.

The company had been cited by regulators for what appeared to be minor safety and permitting violations over the past decade.

While the community tended to its deep wounds, investigators awaited clearance to enter the blast zone for clues to what set off the plant's huge stockpile of volatile chemicals. "It's still too hot to get in there," said Franceska Perot, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Hebrew lives on in Hamas-run Gaza

To get to his home from Israel, you have to cross through Israeli border control to?Gaza, wait for a heavy metal door to open, walk through a half-mile covered walkway enshrouded with wire mesh, give your passport to the Palestinians who serve as intermediaries between Israel and?Hamas?(who are not on speaking terms), then finally go to the Hamas checkpoint and present your Hamas permit, which enables you to finally enter Gaza.

From there, you drive into the?Jabaliya?refugee camp, down a sandy street, until you get to the right alleyway. Turn left, duck under a few clotheslines, and steer clear of the leaky plumbing and haphazard streams of water, and you?ll arrive at Mr. Fares?s simple home with nine of his 15 children (the others have married and moved out). You might notice a rusty key hanging on the wall of the front room, which is bare except for a few beat-up plastic chairs arranged on the cement floor.

That?s the key to his family?s former home in?Yavne, southern Israel, which they had to leave during the 1948-49 war between the newly established state of Israel and its Arab neighbors.

But despite the bitter history between his people and Israeli Jews, Fares has a clear fondness for Israel ? and his former boss at the?Coca-Cola?plant where he worked for years.

Fares worked in Israel from boyhood until 2003, when Israel tightened the border and he was unable to get a work permit, learning Hebrew along the way. Between a round of tea and Palestinian pizza, he quotes a popular proverb: ?In our religion, it says if you know the language of your enemy, you will protect yourself from their hatred and from their evil deeds.??

He suggests Hebrew can help improve understanding between Jews and Arabs. He recalls one time when he saw a Jewish mother and daughter walking down the street in Israel, and the daughter dropped her chocolate on the ground. Because he speaks Hebrew, he understood what the mother said when the girl leaned over to pick it up: ?Don?t be like the Arabs.?

He told the mother ? in Hebrew ? she shouldn?t teach her children to think that way.??

His own children haven?t learned Hebrew, but he hopes that a new Hamas pilot program will expand to include their schools, and prepare the rising generation for a possible thawing of ties between Gaza and Israel.?

?In the future they could be translators, analysts, businessmen,? he says.

92% The Gatekeepers

All Critics (86) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (79) | Rotten (7)

The film and its talking head participants paint the picture in both broad strokes and fine detail.

Whatever one's political stripe regarding Israel, it's hard to dispute the impressions and perspective of the film's six eyewitnesses.

The level of candor here may not satisfy hard-liners of either stripe, but it can help viewers begin to formulate new questions about the philosophical, strategic and moral challenges of conflict, in particular "wars on terror."

Ultimately the movie feels evasive, and its flashy, digitally animated re-creations of military surveillance footage unpleasantly evoke the Call of Duty video games.

It offers startlingly honest insight into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from some of those who called the shots.

As a political testament, the result is revealing and important.

It's a depressing movie, yet there is encouragement to be found in the manifest decency and reasonableness of these six honest, articulate men ...

The former heads of Israel's military anti-terrorism agency Shin Bet break their silence in this unnerving, eye-opening documentary.

The film, though based on the exploits of Shin Bet, gives us reason to think about the drones that take out more than just terrorists.

Makes for truly bracing viewing.

A fascinating film offering a startling look inside one of the most tightlipped intelligence agencies on the planet, and providing powerful resonances with the US and UK's "war on terror".

A compelling overview of a modern security agency - bred in a moral grey area, organising state-sanctioned violence, but uncertain of the strength of its political safety net.

While memorable in sometimes unexpected ways (1980 head Avraham Shalom's long unwashed nails), there is always the nagging feeling that any revelations are being pushed or sold a little too hard.

Dror Moreh's Oscar-nominated documentary is riveting, haunting and depressing in equal measure, offering a sobering assessment of the Israel-Palestine conflict from a unique perspective.

[T]he Oscar-nominated documentary in which the six living former heads of Shin Bet, the ultrasecretive Israeli domestic security agency, talk about their antiterrorism work...

Although The Gatekeepers may not be quite theatrical nor dramatic enough for it to be highly recommended as a cinematic experience, this does feel like a film that really should be seen.

Many secrets are revealed and examined in director Dror Moreh's mind-blowingly fine film. If I have a quibble, it's that he never reveals the most tantalizing secret of all: how the hell he pulled it off.

[An] absorbing documentary, which charts the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the Six Day War to the presentday.

Insightful, revelatory and profound, Moreh's Oscar-nominated documentary combines riveting interviews, archive footage and - yes - state-of-the-art photographic effects to offer a unique perspective on the Israel-Palestine issue.

Both journalistic coup and unsettling confirmation of the idea that 'you can't make peace using military means.'

Much like Errol Morris' "The Fog of War," Dror Moreh's film is a sobering inside look inside history, at mistakes made and opportunities missed.

Moreh employs a direct interviewing style, reminiscent of Errol Morris' work, to get the men to talk about their days leading Shin Bet.

Moreh gets some startling confessions and insights from each man but also misses the opportunity to truly challenge his subjects on their regard for democracy, basic human rights and their own accountability.

Director Dror Moreh doesn't rest on his scoop

Foxconn parent Hon Hai licenses Microsoft's patents for Android, Chrome devices

Microsoft has insisted for years that companies building products based on Android and Chrome are treading on ground covered by its patent portfolio, and it's continuing to press that claim. Today it announced it's agreed to IP licensing terms with another device maker -- Foxconn parent Hon Hai. Perhaps best known for making many Apple products, the massive company manufactures more than 40 percent of consumer electronics devices in the world. According to the press release the deal covers patents for phones, tablets and TVs, and will result in Microsoft receiving royalty payments. We've already seen companies like HTC and LG choose to cut a deal over the technology, while Google-owned Motorola is continuing to fight. It's far too soon to know how those court battles will be resolved, but while the team in Redmond may not have caught up to Android in mobile market share, that doesn't mean it's not getting paid.

Consumers 'Flying Blind' When Purchasing Dietary Supplements, Expert Says

Dietary supplements spiked with pharmaceutical drugs often remain on the market, even when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified these products as tainted, a new study suggests.

Over the last eight years, the FDA has recalled 237 dietary-supplement products because they containedpharmaceutical drugs that were not listed on the product labels. However, an additional 110 supplements that were known to contain drugs were not recalled, the study found.

Dietary supplements are allowed to contain ingredients that supplement the diet ? such as vitamins, minerals and herbs ? but they are not permitted to contain prescription or illegal drugs.

The new findings are concerning because they suggest that, even when the FDA tests supplements and discovers prohibited ingredients, the agency doesn?t always remove these dangerous products, said Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a general internist at Cambridge Health Alliance in Boston.

"What's the point of identifying products [with prohibited drugs] if you can't take them off the marketplace?" said Cohen, who was not involved in the new study.

The recalls described in the new study are voluntary, meaning the FDA asked the manufacturer to recall the product but did not mandate it. It's not clear why 110 products were found to contain drugs but were not recalled, Cohen said.

One possibility, Cohen said, is that the FDA couldn't get in touch with the manufacturer. Indeed, a recent investigation by the Office of the Inspector General found that the FDA did not have accurate contact information for 20 percent of the supplement manufacturers. It's also possible the FDA contacted the manufacturer, but the manufacturer refused to comply, Cohen said.

Of the 237 dietary supplements that were recalled, 40 percent were sexual-enhancement products, 31 percent were body-building supplements and 27 percent were weight-loss supplements.

Unlike medical drugs and devices, dietary supplements do not require FDA approval before they are sold to consumers. The FDA regulates supplements only after they enter the market, and typically must undertake lengthy steps to remove a product it deems unsafe.

"The consumer is flying blind when it comes to purchasing supplements," Cohen said. Until manufacturers follow the law ? and the FDA enforces it ? "these huge categories of supplements need to be completely avoided," he said.

A 2011 study by Cohen and his colleagues found that even supplements that are recalled can still be bought by consumers. The study found that the weight-loss supplement Pai You Guo, which was recalled in 2009 because it contained a banned drug, could still be bought at retail stores.

Cohen said his lab recently tested a sexual-enhancement drug and found it contained pharmaceuticals. Even though the lab alerted ?the FDA about the supplement ? called Sex Plus ? in December 2012, the FDA has yet to warn consumers about it, Cohen said. In March, the FDA issued an alert to consumers about several sexual-enhancement supplements that were found to contain drugs such as Viagra, but Sex Plus was not included in that alert.

Just last Friday the FDA warned consumers not to buy supplements containing the ingredient DMAA, which has been linked to heart attacks. Although the FDA has sent letters to supplement manufacturers, asking them to stop making and selling the DMAA-containing supplement, one manufacturer ? USPlabs ? ?continues to do so, the FDA said. The FDA said it is working on a response to USPlabs, which makes the DMAA-containing drugs OxyELITE Pro and Jack3D.

The dietary supplements that are tested and recalled by the FDA are likely just "the tip of the iceberg," in terms of the percentage of supplements that contain prohibited drugs, Cohen said.

"Given the limited regulation of these products, it is likely that the number of recalls grossly underestimates the number of products on sale with unapproved ingredients," Dr. Mitchell H. Katz, of the Journal of the American Medical Association, wrote in an editorial accompanying the study.

"Dietary supplements should be treated with the same rigor as pharmaceutical drugs and with the same goal: to protect consumer health," Katz said.

Consumers who want to buy supplements should stick with vitamins and minerals, or single-ingredient supplements, Cohen said. They should look for supplements that have been certified by the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention or NSF International, which can provide reassurance that the products contain the proper dosage of ingredients and that they don't contain illegal ingredients, Cohen said.

The study, conducted by researchers at St. Michael?s Hospital in Toronto, examined Class I drug recalls ? serious recalls for which there is a reasonable likelihood that exposure to the product will cause adverse health consequences. Researchers compared those products with those listed on the FDA Tainted Supplements Report, which lists supplements found to be adulterated.

The study is published online today (April 15) in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Pass it on: Even after the FDA identifies supplements that contain prohibited drugs, it does not always recall them.
