Mozilla, the company that makes the Firefox Web browser, will begin selling phones running its new mobile operating system this summer in nine countries: Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain, and Venezuela

Why the slow rollout?

Speaking at AllThingsD's Dive Into Mobile conference today, Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs said Firefox OS will be targeted at emerging markets at first. The first phone will launch around June.

But the US won't be left out. Sprint has already committed to launching a Firefox OS phone, and the first should arrive in 2014. Kovacs said Mozilla is waiting for the ecosystem to develop a bit more before launching in the highly competitive US market.

Firefox OS is a web-based mobile operating system that is open for any developer to tinker with. It's a similar concept to Android, but all apps run within a browser for a uniform experience across all devices.

An earlier version of this story said phones with Firefox OS would launch in five countries. However, it appears Kovacs misspoke. Mozilla PR reached out to us with the full list of launch countries and this story has been changed to reflect that.

Mars Rovers Go Quiet, As Sun Blocks Transmissions

Communications between the Earth and Mars are on hiatus for several weeks, thanks to interference from the sun. That means NASA's orbiters and rovers that study Mars will be left to their own devices until radio signals can once again travel between the two planets.

Known as "solar conjunction," the problem arises when the orbit of planets places the sun directly between them.

"It's like being on either side of a huge bonfire," NASA explains, in a video on its website. "We can't see Mars, and our landers, orbiters and rovers can't see us."

The sun obstructs Earth's radio contact with Mars about once every 26 months. How long the outage lasts depends on Mars' placement "behind" the sun, and on the sun's solar flare activity. In this case, the blackout is expected to peak on April 17.

"Transmissions from Earth to the orbiters will be suspended while Mars and the sun are two degrees or less apart in the sky, from April 9 to 26," NASA says.

But that doesn't necessarily mean the spacecraft will go on spring break.

In a report for our Newscast desk, NPR's Joe Palca says that the two rovers, Opportunity and Curiosity, "will continue to operate but will have to record any data they collect and forward that to Earth... when communications are restored."

The same goes for the two orbiters, Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance, although NASA says Odyssey, in a sort of older-sibling role that befits its longer tenure at the red planet, will stay in touch with Earth and transmit its data again later, to be sure nothing is lost. The biggest risk, NASA says, would be to send a command from Earth to the spacecraft that becomes garbled.

Kerry, Lew to next meet top Chinese officials in July

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Secretary of State John Kerry will meet senior Chinese officials in July as the world's two largest economies continue discussions on currency rates and the North Korean nuclear threat.

The so-called U.S.-China strategic and economic dialogue, an annual high-level forum, will be held in the week of July 8-12 in Washington, the Treasury Department said.

Kerry and Lew will meet Vice Premier Wang Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi, along with members of the Chinese delegation, and their U.S. colleagues.

Kerry has been meeting with China's leaders in Beijing this week, and the two countries agreed to make a joint effort to push for the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Lew traveled to China for a two-day visit in March, where he pushed Beijing to take more action on the exchange rate of the yuan, which many in Washington say is undervalued and is harming U.S. exports.

The discussions in July will follow up on these two meetings, the Treasury said.

"The dialogue will focus on addressing the challenges and opportunities that both countries face on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global areas," it said.

The United States and its allies believe North Korea violated the 2005 aid-for-denuclearization deal by conducting a nuclear test in 2006 and pursuing a uranium enrichment program that would give it a second path to a nuclear weapon in addition to its plutonium-based program.
