Pre-caffeine tech: Google glut, pug hats for babies!?

4 hrs.

Our?pre-caffeine roundup is a collection of the hottest, strangest, and most amusing stories of the morning. Here's everything that you need to know before taking that first sip of coffee.

Google I/O, the search engine giant's annual developer conference kicked off with a keynote event?in San Francisco on Wednesday, where a whole bunch of new stuff was introduced:

  • Nexus 7 tablet,?a 7-inch tablet powered by a Nvidia?Tegra 3 quad-core processor?that will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and come in 8GB ($199)?and 16GB versions ($249). You can order today, but it ships in mid-July.
  • TheNexus Q, the?"first social streaming device of its kind," which streams your music and entertainment from the cloud to your home, or even to your friends who also have Android phones or tablets.
  • Jelly Bean, the next version of the Android operating system, also known as Android 4.1. It's faster and introduces a number of useful new functions: offline voice, more powerful notifications, and a predictive search that gives you answers before you ask.
  • Google Now, a Siri compeitor???powered by?Google Knowledge Graph?? which not only gives you answers, but provides images as well. ?
  • Google co-founder?Sergey Brin turned up to introduce Google Glass via trio of base?jumpers who leaped?from a zeppelin?overhead while wearing Google Glass. It was pretty awesome.

In other news, big changes are coming to Apple's iTunes.?

Facebook reportedly fixed the worst parts of its mobile apps. Expect a speedier ride. Finally!?

If you care, Twitter improved its new follower "Digest."

More importantly: Pug hats for babies. As BuzzFeed's wise Matt Stopera points out: "Every baby should be REQUIRED to wear one of these. No exceptions!"

Boulder, Colorado, USA Mountain belts on Earth are most commonly formed by collision of one or more tectonic plates. The process of collision, uplift, and subsequent erosion of long mountain belts often produces profound global effects, including changes in regional and global climates, as well as the formation of important economic resources, including oil and gas reservoirs and ore deposits. Understanding the formation of mountain belts is thus a very important element of earth science research.

One common but poorly understood aspect of mountain belts are the many examples of curved (arcuate) mountain ranges. The Appalachian range in Pennsylvania, the Rocky Mountains in central Montana, the Blue Mountains in Oregon, the Bolivian Andes of South America, and the Cantabrian Arc in Spain and northern Africa are among many examples of noticeably curved mountain belts.

The cause of these curvy mountains is among the oldest topics of research in geology, and there is still extensive debate on what mechanisms are most important for making a curvy mountain range.

A common question is whether these presently curvy mountain ranges were originally straight and then later bent or whether they were uplifted in more or less their present shape.

Another important aspect of the origin of these curved mountain ranges is the thickness of the rock units involved in their formation. Some workers have proposed that these ranges are composed of relatively thin slices of crustal rocks (limited to several kilometers in thickness), while others have argued that at least some of these curvy ranges involve the entire thickness of the lithospheric plates (30 to 100 km thick). One of the most promising ways to answer these questions utilizes comparisons of the orientation of structural features in rocks (fault planes and joints), records of the ancient magnetic field directions found in rocks, and the timing of deformation and uplift of the mountain belts.

An international group of researchers from Spain, Canada, and the United States, led by Dr. Gabriel Gutirrez-Alonso, have presented a compelling study of one of the best examples of curved mountain ranges: the Cantabrian Arc in Spain and northern Africa. They have compiled an extensive collection of fault and joint orientation data and directions of the ancient geomagnetic field recorded by Paleozoic rocks collected in Spain.

The Cantabrian Arc was formed during the collision of a southern set of continents (Gondwanaland [present day Africa-South America-Australia-India-Antarctica]) with a northern set of continents (Laurentia [present day North America and Eurasia]) to produce the supercontinent Pangea. In a nutshell, their combined study has found that the curved pattern of the Cantabrian Arc was produced by the bending of an originally straight mountain range.

The main line of evidence supporting this view is the patterns of rotation that are obtained from the directions of the ancient geomagnetic field recorded by the rocks of these mountain ranges. Combined with an analysis of the faults and joints in the rocks, and the ages of rocks that have variations in the amount of rotation indicated by the magnetic directions, the age of the bending of the Cantabrian Arc is confined to a relatively narrow window of geological time between 315 and 300 million years ago.

Gutirrez-Alonso and colleagues compare the age range of this mountain bending event to the ages of igneous activity and uplift of the region and propose that widespread changes in the deeper (mantle) portion of the lithospheric plate in the area are coeval, and likely linked to, the rotation of the Cantabrian Arc to produce its characteristic sharp curviness. Based on this linkage, they propose that this, and perhaps many other, curvy mountain ranges are produced by rotation of entire portions of the lithosphere of tectonic plates, rather than just thin slices of crustal rocks.

Legally Speaking ? Women's National Book Association ? NYC

In this New York Bookwoman ?Legally Speaking? column, Dina Di Maio discusses the importance of a clearly defined contract when co-authoring a work.

Yes! I know an author who co-wrote a work and constantly polices it because the other author claims sole ownership and uses it without her permission. It is essential if you are undertaking a collaborative work that you create a collaboration agreement. Even if you and your friend work well together and have a great writing partnership, when it comes to ownership, control, and finances, conflict is bound to arise without clearly defined terms.

There are many things you want to consider in a collaboration agreement. The first is ownership. Under U.S. copyright law, ?a work prepared by two or more authors with the intention that their contributions be merged into inseparable or interdependent parts of a unitary whole? is a joint work. Copyright ownership exists the moment the two authors create the work. However, a collaboration agreement shows ownership of the work and allows parties to divide ownership any way they want. You also want to stipulate who has control over what happens to the book ? who makes artistic decisions. In addition, you want to establish how an advance and royalties will be split. They don?t have to be split evenly. Also, you want to be clear about how the work will be credited ? whose name will be first, will the names be in different sizes, etc. A non-competition clause also may be in order, so that no one author will publish a book that competes with this one. You may also want to be specific about warranties and who will be responsible for breaches of contract. Will you be responsible for the whole book or just a portion? It?s best to be specific and detailed about all of these things. Keep in mind, a collaboration agreement is not a publishing contract, and both authors can decide whether to sign a publishing contract jointly or separately. It is best to seek the advice of an attorney who has experience in collaboration agreements.

Dina Di Maio is an attorney licensed in New York and Tennessee. She worked in the legal department of the Authors Guild and is a member-at-large. She has written/edited for Family Circle, Scholastic, Vault.com, Glamour, Time Out New York, and more. Appetite suppressing tips and tactics | Bodybuilding, Supplements ...

There are certain substances that work as diet or appetite suppressants. These substances are generally chemical in nature and serve to suppress untimely and unnecessary craving for food. These appetite suppressants are also referred to as anorexics wherein ?an? means without and ?orexi? means appetite.

?

Anorexics or appetite suppressants are the dietary supplements or drugs that reduce your appetite. People generally resort to these appetite suppressants when they are gaining weight.

If they reduce their desire to eat, the tendency to gain weight also reduces. Thus, appetite suppressants can be instrumental in reducing obesity or excessive weight.

?

Though there is a perfect and scientific rationale behind appetite suppressants or anorexics, there are a certain hidden facts about these chemical diet suppressing agents which you must be aware of, before deciding upon their consumption. Some of the important facts about appetite suppressants are as follows:

?

Diet suppressants are not very effective in their supposed impact on the human body.

These diet suppressants may helps you reduce weight, but to a very minimal level. For example, if your weight is approximately 200 pounds and if you consume appetite suppressants, you may lose 10-20 pounds of weight. You should not expect a noticeable difference in your weight when you resort to appetite suppressants to reduce your body weight.

Appetite suppressants are chemical substance and as such, these anorexics may cause several side effects to your body. You are recommended to consume these appetite suppressants only if your Basic Metabolic Rate (BMI) exceeds 30.

?

These appetite suppressants may also lead to hemorrhagic strokes.

The most common after effects of appetite suppressants include insomnia, nervousness and restlessness. You may also suffer from abnormal levels of blood pressure.

?

These appetite suppressants may also cause pulmonary hypertension and thereby lead to several cardiovascular ailments.

?

When you use these appetite suppressants regularly, you run the risk of getting addicted to them.

This can have a profound negative impact on your health in the long run.

?

As you can see, appetite suppressants are not all that they are cut out to be. If you can lose weight without using them, you?ll be doing yourself a big favor.

?

The best way to reduce weight is to eat less. Eat smaller meals at frequent intervals (every 2 to 3 hours). You must follow a regular fitness regime to burn extra calories. You may also resort to negative or zero calorie diet foods in order to reduce your body weight.

Graham Nash Works | Arts & Entertainment | Atlantic City Weekly

Neil Young by Graham Nash

Photo by Copyright Graham Nash 2012

Graham Nash has been playing with Crosby, Stills and Nash since 1968. Although he and his at-the-time new band mates ? Crosby, a former member of the Byrds; Stills of Buffalo Springfield, and Nash of the Hollies ? would become one of the biggest radio and concert sensations of the late 1960s and 1970s through today, the trio ? which would also work with Neil Young for many projects ? wasn?t quite ready for its first concert:?

The Atlantic City Pop Festival, held at the Atlantic City Race Course in Mays Landing, just before Woodstock in August 1969.?

?We didn?t play it,? says Nash, on a tour stop with CSN in Providence, Rhode Island. (The band is on the road through October and returns to the Borgata in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 30.)?

Although CSN was to debut live at the A.C. Pop Fest, with its name listed on the festival?s official posters and T-shirts, etc., Nash doesn?t quite remember the circumstances. ?

?I?m not sure to be honest,? he says. ?I?ve been asked this question twice within the last month. ? I believe that we needed more practice. Don?t forget Woodstock was only the second gig we ever played together live. ?

?I think we might have needed more rehearsal or something. Something was going on and we didn?t play that Atlantic City [date, but] there were people who swore they saw us there!??

Aside from singing and playing on such classic tunes as ?Almost Cut My Hair,? ?Teach Your Children,? ?Our House? and ?Chicago,? Nash has been interested in art and photography for decades. ?

Although he has had exhibits of his photography in the past, his paintings ? mainly acrylics ? are being unveiled for the first time beginning this Thursday (June 28) in Stone Harbor.?

While CSN plays the Borgata, Nash?s exhibit ?The Art of Graham Nash? will be on display at Ocean Galleries (9618 Third Ave., Stone Harbor) through Sept. 30. ?

However, on July 1, Nash will be at the gallery in person for a reception between 7-10pm where he will sign purchased art.?

?This exhibit has never been seen before,? says Nash. ?These paintings. I?ve been working on this [exhibit] for about a year and a half now.?

?This whole experience is fresh. It was amazing to me that when the gallery owners came out to my house in Los Angeles and saw my work it was their response that got me excited because, I mean, they?re supposed to know what they?re doing ? they?ve had an art gallery for a couple decades now and they?re this excited! It was shocking to me.? ?

So Nash decided to share his intriguing imagery with the world.?

?Why not let other people see them?? Nash says. ?You know? It?s brand new to me and it?s going to be exciting.??

Exciting for southern New Jersey folks as well, as the Ocean Galleries exhibit is the world premiere of Nash?s paintings of images and people such as Neil Young. ?

Nash says he is already working on another exhibit of different works.?

?I?ve done another exhibit of very serious work that I?ve been doing,? says Nash. ?

?Almost brutal images of things that disturb me. ... It?s hard to say what they are. They are a combination of painting and photographs and images that I made collages of ? interesting work. And there will only be seven pieces in the entire exhibit. Six of them will be four-feet-square and one image will be four-feet-high by 12-feet long.??

Aside from the images that will be on display at Ocean Galleries this summer, Nash?s Web site shows more than 40 photographs the 70-year-old multi-faceted artist has taken over the years.?

?I?ve been a photographer longer than I?ve been a musician,? says Nash. ?The first portrait that I ever took where I thought I had something was of my mother when I was 11.??

On the Web site, there is a photo of Bob Dylan playing live at Madison Garden for the George Harrison-organized Concert for Bangladesh. ?

?Oh, yes I was there. That?s Leon Russell there behind him. I was there to purely watch George pull off a piece of wonderfulness. It was a great, great concert.??

So, has Nash shown any of his subjects his paintings of them??

?No, neither David [Crosby] or Stephen [Stills] Neil [Young] or Joni [Mitchell] have seen any of these. It?s kind of wild; it would be interesting to hear their reaction.? The Neil Young image was painted from a photograph Nash took of the musician ?years ago.??

RELATED: INTERVIEW WITH STEPHEN STILLS ('IT'S DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN')

?I really like it and I blew it up larger on canvas and painted it. There are several in there because not only are they all different colors and different interpretations, but I wrote a line from a Neil song into every painting.??

One of the Neil Young images is called ?Neil Young ? Hurricane,? which is a line from his song, ?Like a Hurricane.? There is also Neil Young ? Old Man, with, along his shoulder line, I?ve written a line from his song ?Old Man.? Just pushing it all forward.?

Like fellow musician Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, who also has a southern New Jersey art exhibit (at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City through July, see images here), Nash prefers acrylic paint to oils. ?

?Right now, I?m loving acrylic,? says Nash. ?I don?t do [work] in oil. I?m too impatient. It takes too long to dry. It takes days to dry. It drives me crazy.??

Wanderlust (2012)

Role Models was a surprise cross-over hit for the team behind the cult comedies Wet Hot American Summer and The Ten, so our expectations were pretty high for their latest outing. Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston play uptight New Yorkers George and Linda who are forced to move to Atlanta when he?s fired. On the way they stop at Elysium bed and breakfast, a commune (or ?intentional community?). Can they put their city ways behind them and embrace a madcap hippy lifestyle, and do they really want to?While Wanderlust isn?t as funny as Role Models, there is plenty to enjoy here. Rudd is terrific as George, eager to open up and try new things before realising that these new things may not be for him. It?s a role that gives him plenty of opportunity to showcase his ability to combine bizarre improvisation as well as cynical joy-killing. Faring less well is Aniston, who sadly doesn?t stray too far from her usual persona. It?s not a bad performance by any means, but it?s not strong enough to make her stand out in a cast full of on-form character actors. Special notice must be given to Justin Theroux (Mulholland Drive) as hairy guru Seth who?s still making snide references to a corporate world from several decades ago, and Kerri Kenney-Silver (Role Models) as a well-intentioned but intrusive Elysium member, while Joe LoTruglio, Kathryn Hahn, Jordan Peele, Lauren Ambrose, Ken Marino, Michaela Watkins, and Alan Alda each get a chance to shine. But it?s all a bit slight. Although it doesn?t drag during its brief running time, there?s not really a lot to it beyond the fish-out of water setting and giving the ensemble free rein. It?s enjoyable, if not particularly memorable.Verdict: Another great comic performance from Rudd and an excellent supporting cast make Wanderlust a fun journey. It may not be their best but it?s certainly entertaining.

House rejects bid to slash rural airline subsidies

(AP) ? The House has turned back an attempt by a tea party-backed GOP conservative to slash taxpayer subsidies for air service to isolated smaller cities and towns that can cost hundreds of dollars a ticket.

The 238-164 vote late Tuesday killed a bid by Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., to slash the Essential Air Service program, which subsidizes flights to 120 communities in 35 states in the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico and 43 towns in Alaska.

The vote came as the House debated a $107 billion transportation spending bill for the budget year beginning Oct. 1.

Republicans controlling the House had voted to eliminate the oft-criticized program last year while they considered renewing federal aviation programs, but a coalition of Democrats and Republicans representing rural America reversed the move in the Senate.

Despite modest changes to the program enacted earlier this year, its budget now would reach a new high ? to $214 million ? under Tuesday's legislation. McClintock's amendment would have eliminated $114 million in direct taxpayer subsidies; he was blocked under House rules from attacking $100 million in subsidies automatically financed by "overflight" fees paid by aircraft that fly over the U.S. but don't take off or land here.

"This is about the easiest choice the House could possibly make, to put an end to the so-called Essential Air Service that lavishly subsidizes some of the least essential air services in the country," McClintock said. "Rural life has both great advantages and disadvantages, and it is not the job of hardworking taxpayers who choose to live elsewhere to level out the differences."

The program awards contracts, usually worth between $1 million and $2 million a year, to subsidize airlines that serve airports such as Altoona, Pa., Paducah, Ky., and Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Such subsidies can be quite modest, but can reach hundreds of dollars each way on a round-trip ticket from places like Ironwood in Michigan's Upper Peninsula or several towns in Montana.

The changes enacted earlier require that subsidized routes must average at least 10 passengers a day if they are to be renewed when current contracts are up, and new communities are blocked from receiving the subsidies. Last year, Congress prohibited subsidies from exceeding $1,000 a passenger. The savings from such steps will take a while to take hold but are likely to prove modest.

Supporters of the subsidies say having access to air service is crucial to the economies of rural towns.

"This program plays a key role in the economic development in many rural communities by ensuring that air service continues," said Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa.

In fact, the wide reach of the program contributes to the sweeping support it gets, both from Democrats but also from conservative Republicans who suspend their anti-big-government rhetoric when their districts are affected.

(AP) ? An internal investigation has concluded that the departing chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission engaged in bullying and intimidation, creating a tense working environment at the agency.

The report by the NRC's inspector general found at least 15 instances when NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko (YAHTS-koh) acted in a way that senior employees or fellow commissioners found intimidating or bullying.

The report also said Jackzo's testimony before House and Senate committees last December was "inconsistent" with testimony provided to the inspector general by senior NRC officials. The committees were investigating Jaczko's behavior.

The report upheld Jaczko's declaration last year that Japan's nuclear crisis constituted an emergency for the United States.

A summary of the report was obtained by The Associated Press.

Jaczko announced his resignation in May.

PFT: Browns need to trade McCoy ASAP

7753611adeee4ae3af86172c5cd1b1a9AP

Since it?s supposed to be a slow week, here?s an item that is best suited for consideration during a slow week.

Colts owner Jim Irsay has taken to Twitter to call me out personally for a joke included at the bottom of a Saturday item regarding Irsay?s position that marketing rights aren?t holding up an eventual contract with quarterback Andrew Luck.

Since most of the latest available pictures of Luck show him wearing a mortar board and a gown tied and draped over his shoulders like an Andy Bernard sweater, and given that the topic of the item was Luck?s marketing rights via the poorly-crafted tweets of Jim Irsay, I closed with this:? ?Luck likely will be free to endorse whatever he wants to endorse, including the use of images of his Stanford graduation to be included in a campaign for online courses aimed at teaching rich, middle-aged white guys how to type legibly on Twitter.?

It was a slap at Irsay?s notorious habit of oft-indecipherable Twitter messages, and using the term ?rich, middle-aged white guys? was aimed at describing Irsay?s overall demographic.

Irsay didn?t see it that way.? On Monday morning, Irsay started the debate with this:

Then, without a response, he said this:

I considered not taking the bait; after all, the guy owns an NFL team.? But like I mentioned above, it?s slow right now.? Also, I wasn?t entirely comfortable with the not-so-subtle effort to suggest that I expect only white people to type legible Twitter message.? (For the record, I expect everyone to type legibly on Twitter.)? Besides, Irsay asked a question.? The least I could do was answer it.

A loyal PFT reader (I knew there was at least one) thereafter responded to the kerfuffle. Irsay then replied to Wes LaFever?s tweet with this:

So, basically, Jim Irsay thinks I?m a racist and I don?t like old people (even though I?m now seven years into the legally-protected class of old people) and I don?t like rich people (even though I?d very much like to be one, someday).

Wow.? He really has cracked the code.

Now if only I could crack the code for interpreting 99.8 percent of his Twitter messages, this job would be a lot easier.

(AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood victory in Egyptian presidential elections, announced Sunday, has raised fears in Israel that its strategic 1979 peace agreement with its southern neighbor could be in danger.

In contrast, in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, ecstatic residents flocked into the streets, fired guns in the air and handed out candy in celebration.

Israel's peace agreement with Egypt, its first with an Arab country, is a cornerstone of Israeli security. The agreement ended decades of hostilities, with to five wars and thousands of deaths.

While relations have never been warm, Egypt has upheld the deal, keeping its bordering Sinai peninsula largely demilitarized, allowing the Israeli military to focus on other hostile borders with the Palestinians, Syria and Lebanon.

In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he respected the results of Egypt's democratic process and hoped the peace agreement would remain intact.

"Israel expects to continue cooperation with the Egyptian government on the basis of the peace agreement between the two countries, which is of interest to the two peoples and contributes to regional stability," he said.

With the Egyptian military still the ultimate power in Egypt, senior Israeli defense officials who maintain contacts with Egypt said Sunday that they do not expect any immediate changes in relations. Over the long term, they warned, the Brotherhood may seek to cancel the peace agreement. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a sensitive security assessment.

The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, is a pan-Arabic movement that favors creation of a Muslim state that encompasses the entire Middle East. It has never given up that goal, but as it gains official power in Egypt, winning parliamentary elections and now the presidency, it has indicated pragmatic willingness to accept the existence of Israel.

Addressing his nation Sunday evening, Morsi declared he had a "message of peace. We will respect all international agreements," he said, without mentioning Israel.

Although some Brotherhood leaders have said they will never meet with an Israeli official, they have been careful to say they would not cancel the treaty. Like many other Egyptians, they favor amendments ? primarily to allow more Egyptian troops into the Sinai. Israel has already permitted an increase of troops there, demanding that Egypt bring violent extremists under control.

Armed gangs are believed to control wide swaths of territory, smugglers have helped thousands of African migrant workers sneak into Israel and various Arab militant groups, some believed to have ties to al-Qaida, operate freely.

Eli Shaked, a former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, said the Egyptians would "have a lot to lose" if they canceled the peace, including Western investment and billions of dollars in U.S. aid. Even so, he warned, the treaty was not safe.

In the Gaza Strip, tens of thousands of joyous Palestinians took to the streets across the territory after the result was announced.

Gunmen fired automatic weapons in the air, and mosque loudspeakers reverberated with prayers. Some revelers handed out candy on street corners.

The celebrations were marred when one person was killed and six others wounded by celebratory gunfire.

Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood's ascent to power in Egypt has raised hopes that Gaza's relations with its powerful southern neighbor will improve.

"Today is new era for us in Gaza. The days of suffering due to the Egyptian authorities are over, said Rawhi Talab, 51, a food store owner.

Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar told a rally in downtown Gaza that "the heart of Jerusalem has started to beat again," adding, "We are not asking Egypt to fight on our behalf." Hamas does not recognize Israel.

Mubarak collaborated with Israel in a blockade of Gaza. The blockade, first imposed after Hamas-linked gunmen captured an Israeli soldier in 2006, was tightened the following year when Hamas violently seized power in the seaside strip.

Israel said the blockade was needed to prevent arms shipments to Hamas. Under heavy international pressure, Israel lifted some limits two years ago and Egypt eased travel restrictions after Mubarak's ouster.

Morsi has not yet said what plans he has for dealing with Gaza, which shares a 15-kilometer (nine-mile) border with Egypt, which ruled Gaza from 1948 to 1967.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh phoned Morsi to congratulate him on becoming Egypt's first Islamist president. "This is a victory for all Arabs and Muslims, and this is God's promise to his believers," the Hamas leader said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a secular leader who governs in the West Bank, also congratulated Morsi. "The president expressed his respect for the choice of the great Egyptian people," according to a statement from the official Wafa news agency.

The leaders of Kuwait and Bahrain sent cables to Morsi congratulating him, according to statements carried by their official news agencies.

Microsoft: Should They Buy Nokia? (VIDEO)

As I noted in a post on Friday, Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund has discovered that Pegatron, the contract manufacturer building the Surface tablets for Microsoft, is also at work on a prototype Windows 8 handset for Microsoft. That?s fascinating: it suggests either a) Microsoft really is adopting the Apple model, which calls for tight software and hardware integration, or b) the company is not confident about the long-term future for Nokia, or c) both of those.

While experimenting with branded phones, the company also could decide to simply buy Nokia; it might worth it for the IP and the Navteq mapping business along, even if they scrapped the Nokia-branded handset business.

In this video, I pass along a few thoughts on the situation.
