Easy And Delicious French Dip Recipe - Ayushveda

Contrary to the name the French dip is apparently invented in the city of Los Angeles of America and is among one of the popular dishes of United States. It has no French origin and is almost?unheard in France; the only French connection to the dish is the French roll that is used as a bread to assemble the sandwich.

The dish is made by French roles stuffed with juicy roasted beef and?the extract juices (jus) of roasted beef is served as dip on the side. Clearly the dish is not just a dip as the name suggests rather it?s a sandwich.

French Dip

The star of the dish is the jus which is served as side with the sandwich. It has strong beefy flavor to it which comes from the marrow and knuckle bones of the meat. Ideally the sandwich is?prepared by filling a slightly buttered toasted French role with the slices of juicy slow roasted beef but other version can be found in different geography of United States.

Unlike other sandwiches?this French Dip Sandwich is suppose to be eaten by dipping every bite in the dipping jus before you sink your tooth into it. French fries and ketchup are often served as sides with the sandwich.?Sometimes the sandwich is served wet by dipping the French roll in the same jus that is served on the side.

In some cases cheese and other seasoning are added to the sandwich. It can be made?with different kind of meats since Americans are hearty beef eaters the traditional version remains the most admired in the country. Slow roasted succulent beef may sound like a chore to make?but you don?t have to be a restaurant chef to make this one.

Slow Cooker French Dip Sandwich

Total Time: 5 Hour 15 Minutes
Serving: 6 People

Ingredients

For Jus (Dipping Sauce)

4 ? pound meaty beef bones (knuckles and marrow) cut into 3 inches pieces
2 ? table spoon vegetable oil
1 cup dry red wine
3 cup beef broth
2 table spoon olive oil
Freshly ground black pepper
Salt to taste

For Sandwich

6 French roles
1 stick of room temperature butter (around 8 table spoon)
1 ? beef chuck roast
4 table spoon Worcestershire sauce
3 table spoon tomato paste
4 cup onions chopped
8-10 cloves of garlic (minced)
1 bay leaf
2 ? cup beef broth
Freshly ground black pepper
4 table spoon Olive oil

Preparation

To Make the Jus

Season the bones generously with salt and pepper and keep them aside. Heat a heavy bottom pan on medium temperature and add olive oil to the pan. Add half of the seasoned bone in the pan?and get a nice sear on each side of the bone while continuously changing sides to make sure they don?t burn.

Get a good sear on the bones for about 6-8 minutes until they start to look golden?brown. Take out the bones on a plate and start to sear the second batch of remaining bones. Repeat the whole process and remove the rest of the bones on the same plate.

Add dry red wine in the pan and mix it with the flavored oil nicely. Let it simmer for 3 to 4 minutes until the wine start to thicken. Add the seared bones to the pan including all the leftover juices on?the plate. Add beef broth, salt, freshly crushed pepper, reduce the heat to low and put the lid on. Let the mixture simmer for 12-15 minutes until it absorbs the meaty flavor from the bone.

Bring up the heat to high, remove the lid and let the mixture simmer for another 7-8 minutes until reduced in half. Give it a taste and adjust salt, pepper if needed let it simmer for another two?minutes and remove from the heat.

Remove the bones and strain the mixture through a fine strainer collect the jus and dispose the remains. Let the jus sit for 5 minutes until you can see the extra fat floating on the top of the jus.?Remove the extra fat with the help of a spoon and keep the jus aside. Remember to warm up the jus on a low heat for 1-2 minutes before serving it with the sandwich.

To Make the Sandwich

Heat a saut? pan over medium heat and add olive oil to the pan. Trim the extra fat from the beef chuck, season it with generous amount of salt and pepper and add it to the pan. Get a good brown?sear on all the sides of the meat then add bay leaf, chopped onions, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, tomato paste to the pan and saut? it for 1 minute.

Take a slow cooker and set it to lowest temperature. Let the meat cook for 4 hours on low heat until its tender enough to break up with the help of a spoon. Remove the meat and place it on a?plate. Extract the extra juice and collect it into a bowl. Cut the meat into thin slices and set it aside to assemble the sandwich.

Cut the French roles in half, spread some butter on them and set them on a baking tray. Set the oven to broil and place the backing tray in the middle rack. Toast the French roles in the oven for 2?minutes until golden then remove the backing tray form the oven.

Dip the sliced beef in the jus extracted from slow cooker and start layering it on the sandwich. Place 2-3 layers of juicy beef on both side of the roles and press them into a sandwich. Repeat the?process to assemble the rest of sandwiches and cut each sandwich in half for better handling. Divide the jus made by bones into six equal portions and serve with the sandwiches.

The juicy perfection French dip sandwich can be eaten as is but you can add your own twist on the traditional version if you like. Sprinkle some shredded cheese on the beef and melt it in the?preheated oven for 1-2 minutes or spread some herb cheese or flavored butter on the French roles to add an extra layer of flavors to the dish.
