Toshiba's 2012 Q3 makes $322 million net profit, sees a future in nuclear

Toshibas 2012 Q3 makes $322 million net profit, thinks its future is nuclear

Toshiba's latest numbers may not reach the dizzying heights of last quarter, but at least it's not back to filling out its spreadsheets in red pen. The company is announcing profits of $322 million from net sales of $14.9 billion. A big chunk of that change came from Tosh's "social infrastructure" division, which produces power plants, medical systems and radiation detectors -- while its home entertainment and computing divisions sat and watched profits continue to decline. Toshiba has maintained the cut-back forecast it made in October, expecting annual net profits to be around $1.2 billion, more than enough for it to send you a cute bug-eyed robot for your next birthday.

Biz Break: Facebook's momentum gains as economic concerns hurt Wall Street

Today: Facebook highlights its mobile efforts in an earnings report that exhibits growth in revenues, but a drop in profits due to heavy spending. Also: Wall Street drops on report of shrinking economy, Research in Motion shows off new offerings, name.

Facebook's mobile efforts pay off, but investors still wary

Facebook ended its IPO year with momentum on its side, as the Menlo Park social network's earnings report issued Wednesday showed mobile usage surpassing desktop just as the company is beginning to show fruit from

the pursuit of mobile revenues.

Facebook reported revenues of $1.58 billion for the final three months of 2012, a 40 percent increase from the same quarter a year ago, though profits descended to 3 cents a share as the company spent heavily on employees and infrastructure to build for the future. Without the one-time costs, Facebook's profits were 17 cents a share, beating Wall Street projections of 15 cents a share on revenues of $1.53 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

The most important numbers in the report focused on mobile usage and revenues. Facebook announced that it now has more daily average visitors on mobile devices than desktop, with 680 million of its 1.06 billion monthly active members accessing the social

network through its mobile applications. Facebook was able to leverage that usage, pushing its mobile advertising revenue to 23 percent of its total advertising revenue, a gain from 14 percent the previous quarter, when the company announced that statistic for the first time. total income from mobile advertising more than doubled to $305 million in the quarter.

"Today there's no argument. Facebook is a mobile company," Zuckerberg said on a conference call with analysts, later adding "We started off the year with no ads on mobile ... (and) ended with 23 percent of ad revenue coming from mobile"

After its record-breaking May initial public offering, Facebook stock plummeted as analysts and investors doubted the company's ability to monetize its mobile users, which the company admitted was a weak spot. However, Facebook has focused on pushing ads into users' mobile news feeds and openly pushed into other possible revenue-generating areas in order to satisfy investors, which has helped push its stock back up.

"They said they were going to focus on mobile and they have executed there," Edward Jones investment analyst Josh Olson told the Mercury News on Wednesday.

Facebook shares did not immediately react positively to the report despite the mobile advances, with shares dropping 10 percent immediately after the release. However, prices quickly returned to the $30 level they have bounced around for the past few weeks, though there was an after-hours drop of about 4 percent on concerns about Facebook's heavy spending, which pushed operating expenses up 82 percent.

"More mobile revenue means way more spending on the operations of selling ads," Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser told Bloomberg News. "This is an expensive company to run."

In Wednesday's regular session, Facebook gained 1.5 percent to close at $31.24.

Stocks decline as report shows decline in U.S. economic growth

Wall Street's hot start to 2013 hit a speed bump Wednesday, as bad news arrived on the economic front: The federal government reported that the United States' gross domestic product actually shrank in the final three months of the year, the first time the U.S. economy has contracted since 2009.

The Commerce Department's report showed that GDP dropped 0.1 percent at an annualized rate in the fourth quarter of 2012 due to a mix of private-sector slowdowns -- possibly caused by uncertainty from the "fiscal cliff" negotiations -- and a steep cut in military spending.

Despite the contraction, economists were not concerned, saying the result was due to special, one-time factors that will not continue to effect the still-recovering U.S. economy. Capital Economics economist Paul Ashworth called it "the best-looking contraction in U.S. GDP you'll ever see," and IHS Global Insight director of financial economics Paul Edelstein told Bloomberg News, "This is not a recessionary signal by any means."

In fact, JPMorgan economist Michael Feroli told Reuters the dip was good news for the future, as it "leaves the economy relatively well-positioned heading into the first quarter."

Investors still didn't care for the news, however, sending all three indexes down on the day, a rare occurrence in a month that has been very strong for the markets. The 0.4 percent drop for the Standard & Poor's 500 was its biggest one-day drop so far in 2013, an example of how positive the year has been so far.

Research in Motion takes the stage, Electronic Arts still struggling

Tech stocks were on line with the overall market, as the Nasdaq also fell 0.4 percent and the SV150 index of Silicon Valley's largest tech companies declined 0.3 percent.

The biggest event in tech did not come from Silicon Valley on Wednesday, however: Research in Motion showed off its long awaited new mobile operating system, along with two new phones, in a series of events worldwide. The Canadian company also announced it is changing its name to BlackBerry, the brand name of its formerly iconic smartphones that have been overtaken by Apple's (AAPL) iPhone and devices running Google's (GOOG) Android operating system. The announcement didn't help the company's stock price: After a prolonged rally going into the launch party, the stock dropped 12 percent Wednesday on the Nasdaq.

Wednesday's non-Facebook entry in Silicon Valley's earnings season was Electronic Arts (ERTS), the video game maker that faces pressure as cheap mobile games overtake the more labor-intensive console games the Redwood City company has made its name on. EA's problems were not solved in the holiday-shopping quarter of 2012, as revenues declined from more than $1 billion in the 2011 quarter to $922 million, resulting in a loss of 15 cents a share. Shares fell almost 2 percent in after-hours trading following a gain of 0.9 percent in regular trading.

Indonesia and Japan improve military ties

Bagus BT Saragih, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | World | Wed, January 30 2013, 12:10 PM

Paper Edition | Page: 12

Indonesia and Japan have agreed that the two Asian powers must engage in stronger cooperation, including in the military sector, to contribute to regional security particularly in the Pacific area, which has been tense due to prolonged territorial disputes.

The commitment was made by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) commander Gen. Eiji Kimizuka when the two met at Yudhoyono?s office in Jakarta on Tuesday. ?The two countries agree that Indonesian-Japanese ties are very good, robust and improving, especially in the sectors of defense and military,? Yudhoyono said upon welcoming his Japanese guests.

Accompanying the President were Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and Indonesian Army Commander Gen. Pramono Edhie Wibowo. The Japanese contingent included the JGSDF?s research, program and policy head Col. Yoshihisa Nakano, Japan?s Ambassador to Indonesia Yoshinori Katori and Japan?s Defense Attach? to Indonesia Capt. Toshiako Kondo.

The JGSDF is Japan?s ad-hoc army and the main branch of the Japanese military, the Japan Self-Defense Force.

Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said that both the Indonesian and Japanese sides highlighted the importance of promoting stability and security in regions such as Southeast Asia, Asia-Pacific and East Asia.

Japan has been involved in a prolonged dispute with China over islands in the East China Sea which has soured relationships between the two nations.

Marty said, however, the meeting did not specifically mention Japan?s territorial conflicts with China.

According to Purnomo, the meeting discussed potential military cooperation in five fields, namely education and training, human resources, the defense industry, counterterrorism, as well as disaster relief management.

?Indonesia and Japan are longtime partners in the economic sector. But these days, the Japanese government has initiated cooperation in defense-related fields too,? Purnomo said.

?After World War II, Japan?s development of its military was halted, focusing only on self-defense. But today, Japan has seen tensions with some countries, such as China and Russia. The development of the security situation in the region has prompted Japan to improve its military capacity and fleets,? he added.

According to Purnomo, Yudhoyono also invited the Japanese general to attend joint-counterterrorism exercises in the Indonesian Peace and Security Center (IPSC) in Sentul, West Java, in September.

The exercises are expected to involve counterterrorism forces from 18 countries worldwide.

?Japan has accepted the invitation and will send a delegation consisting of nuclear, biology and chemical specialists,? Purnomo said.

Japan?s new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Jakarta two weeks ago and had a bilateral meeting with Yudhoyono at the state palace.

Japan has been Indonesia?s biggest trading partner for years. Trade between the two countries in 2011 reached US$53.15 billion with a surplus of $14.28 billion on the Indonesian side.

Iran launches monkey into space

Lisa Grossman, physical sciences reporter

Last summer, the Iranian Space Agency announced their plan to send a monkey into space - and now they've apparently done it.

According to Iranian state-run television, a press release on the space agency's website, and photos of the event, Iran sent a live rhesus monkey into sub-orbital space aboard a small rocket called Pishgam, or Pioneer. There's even a video posted on YouTube that appears to be of the launch (though New Scientist could not confirm its authenticity).

The report has not been confirmed independently, however, and the US air force's North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has not reported seeing any missile launches from Iran.

But independent observers say the launch looks legitimate.

"Really, I see no reason not to take their word for it," says Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who also keeps a log of space launches. He says he's convinced by the photos and discussions he's had with several knowledgeable source in online forums.

In photos released on the Iranian Space Agency's website, the rocket looks like the same kind the agency has launched before, but with a larger nose cone designed to fit a small chamber that can support life. Images also showed a live rhesus monkey strapped to a small seat.

The reports say the rocket went straight up 120 kilometres, which McDowell says qualifies as outer space, but not high enough to reach orbit, and came back down with a parachute.

It's unclear exactly when the launch took place. The press release says that the launch happened on the birthday of Mohammed the Prophet, which is celebrated by Shiites on 29 January, but was celebrated last week elsewhere in the world.

Some countries worry that Iranian rockets capable of carrying animals or people could also carry weapons. Iran has denied any military intention.

"This is not a scary thing because this is not a big new rocket that could hit America or anything like that," McDowell says. "There's nothing military to this. It's purely for propaganda. Nevertheless, it advances their science and their technology by being able to do it."

Iran says the launch is a first step towards sending humans into space, which they intend to do in the next 5 to 8 years. To do that, McDowell says, they'll need to build a larger rocket. The country currently has a vehicle called Safir that has successfully put satellites in orbit, and is developing a more powerful launcher called Simorgh.

The next step will probably be to either launch Safir to carry a human to sub-orbital space, or an unmanned Simorgh flight into orbit to make sure mission controllers can return it to the ground safely.

"They don't want to repeat what the Soviets did" in 1957, McDowell says, "which is put a living being in orbit before you figure out how to get it back."

Luxury homes in Japan with Sotheby's International Realty ? Real ...

The name Sotheby?s is well known as an auction house that dates back 270 years, but many people may not be aware that it is also a high-end real estate brokerage company. Established in 1976, Sotheby?s International Realty began by offering its auction clientele real estate services. It currently has over 600 offices located in 45 countries and territories, giving clients unprecedented access to properties that span the globe.

In 2010, Sotheby?s International Realty opened its Tokyo office in order to make a full-scale entry into the rapidly expanding Asian market. Its 15-strong team provides a full range of real estate services in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

Japan Today meets with Chief Operating Officer Yutaka Takeda at the company?s new office in Hiroo Plaza to hear more about the business.

What is your background?

I was actually born in Hiroo, not too far from this office. I went to Seikei University?the same university as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. His elder brother was my classmate. My major was economics. After graduating, I worked for JAL for 30 years, in sales, marketing, as well as the group?s hotel and resort business. I joined Sotheby?s in June 2010.

What is Sotheby?s International Realty?s history?

Many clients of the auction house are interested in high-end real estate, so Sotheby?s International Realty was founded in New York in 1976 to look after their needs. At first, the focus was mainly in Europe and the United States. In the 2000s, the company started pushing expansion in Asia and as a result, branches opened in Hong Kong and Japan three years ago, and Taiwan opened last year.

We have a very strong alliance with the auction house and one of our strengths is our reputable brand name and access to the world?s wealthy individuals. While some clients are auction clients, we do have our own client base, as well.

How were the last two years?

2011 was a very difficult year because of the earthquake and fear of radiation. Inbound business dropped off. However, after the March 11 disaster, some Japanese felt, probably for the first time in their life, that maybe they need a place to escape to if there is another disaster. That fuelled demand for real estate overseas. As a result, we saw good growth in the latter half of 2012.

Where are your Japanese clients looking to buy?

Hawaii is definitely No. 1. Singapore is very popular, also. For high-end Japanese clients, Europe is in demand ? Monaco, Switzerland, Paris. There is also interest in the Gold Coast in Australia and New Zealand. Our sales outside of Japan are heavily connected to whether there are direct flights to those destinations from Japan. But even if there isn?t a direct flight, our strength is our international network ? 600 offices in 45 countries. So we can help you with your real estate needs very quickly.

Who are your typical Japanese clients?

All ages, really, ranging from retirees to people in their 30s. Many of our clients buy real estate overseas for investment or they might go to stay there once or twice a year. Time share is a very big market for Japan. I would say that there are nearly 40,000 Japanese owners who have purchased Hilton and Marriot time-shares in Hawaii. That gives you some idea of how important a market Hawaii is.

What about your inbound business?

Many of our clients come from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore. There are some Americans or Europeans married to Japanese, who are interested in buying property in Tokyo. While the demand is mainly for Tokyo, we do receive some inquiries for residences in ski areas such as Hakone, Karuizawa and ski areas such as Hakuba and Niseko.

Where do you see growth potential?

We wish to boost our business of selling more to foreigners in Japan. That?s why we have recently moved to this new office in Hiroo. Many foreigners recognize the brand name and often drop in. Our office is open seven days a week and we want to be more in touch with the foreign community. We are like a concierge and our experienced staff speak Japanese, English and Chinese.

We have a close relationship with our clients. When they are in Tokyo, they often drop in and have lunch and talk about the market, real estate. I think that is one of our unique points.

How do you market the brand?

Our head office issues a publication called Reside twice a year. The auction house has a publication eight times a year and they have a real estate section. Hong Kong has a publication six times a year and does direct mail to 20,000 wealthy individuals. Japan?s properties are included in all those publications. Besides that, we have editorial tie-ups with a number of Japanese publications. We use YouTube and Facebook, as well as our website.

More proactively, we started holding Hawaiian real estate seminars in December 2011. It turned out to be a very big success and we have since held seminars in Osaka and Nagoya, usually once every six months. The last one, which was a collaboration with CNBC/Nikkei, drew 160 people. Most were serious clients.

How do you find properties?

We have a strong relationship with developers and construction companies, so we keep up to date on the market. We also have a team who specialize in looking for available properties. There is a saying in this business that many properties become available due to the 3 Ds ? death, divorce and debt.

What is a typical day for you?

I show up around 9 a.m. After tending to emails, we have meetings. I am more involved in cross-border transactions because I have good connections all over the world from my JAL days. I often have lunches and dinners with clients. That is an important part of the job. Sometimes I work on weekends, if I meet foreign visitors and show them properties.

(AP) ? Marcel Hirscher won a World Cup slalom for the 10th time in his career Sunday, drawing roars from a home crowd that included Austria-born Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Hirscher became the first Austrian since Klaus Kroell in 2009 to win a race at the Hahnenkamm event, one of the classic stops on the men's World Cup calendar.

Ivica Kostelic of Croatia won the combined, which adds the slalom results to those from Saturday's downhill. He became the first skier to win that competition four straight years.

Hirscher was third in the opening leg but was fastest in the second run to finish in a combined time of 1 minute, 44.34 seconds for his 17th career title. It was Hirscher's first victory in Kitzbuehel.

"If you want to be among the greatest skiers, you have to win in Kitzbuehel at least once," Hirscher said. The defending overall champion extended his lead in both the overall and slalom World Cup standings.

In the overall title race, Hirscher has 1,035 points to lead Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal by 114.

Felix Neureuther of Germany was 0.77 back in second, and Kostelic finished third, 0.91 behind Hirscher. Ted Ligety of the United States was among those who failed to finish.

Ligety skied out after five gates, failing to score points for a second straight day after missing a gate in the downhill. He finished sixth in Friday's super-G and remained in third place in the overall standings with 736 points.

"Kitz weekend started well but went sideways fast. Literally and figuratively," Ligety wrote on Twitter.

In the combined, Frenchmen Alexis Pinturault and Thomas Mermillod Blondin were second and third. Kostelic matched Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt's record of six straight podium finishes in this event.

Hirscher, who was beaten by Neureuther in a slalom in Wengen, Switzerland, last week, has won five races and finished on the podium 13 times this season.

With each victory worth 100 points, the Austrian has now gained a stunning 700 points in eight slaloms this season. Neureuther trails him by 134 points in second.

"It's not getting easier, the pressure is immense," Hirscher said. "If you get so many podiums in one season, you expect yourself to finish top five in each race."

Hirscher used an attacking yet error-free second run to win the race after trailing Stefano Gross and Giuliano Razzoli in the opening run. Both Italians, however, had costly mistakes in their final runs and finished 11th and fourth, respectively.

"It was a very, very tough race," Neureuther said. "In the second run, I raced tactically smart. Marcel showed the aggression you need to win here. He was always going to be the man to beat."

Kostelic called himself fortunate after finishing on the podium despite being more than 0.4 seconds off the top three in his opening run.

"I was lucky today and I wasn't expecting a top-three finish anymore," said Kostelic, adding that he admired the run of Austrian veteran Benjamin Raich. "I was inspired by the way Benni was skiing today."

Raich posted the second-fastest time in the final leg, just 0.10 slower than Hirscher, to climb from 25th to fifth place.

In a difficult first run, 28 racers failed to finish. The slalom gates were placed by Italian technical coach Jacques Theolier after an initial course set by Croatia's Ante Kostelic, father of Ivica and former women's overall champion Janica, was rejected as being too difficult by the international ski federation.

According to men's race director Guenter Hujara, the course was "unskiable" and Kostelic refused to change it, prompting the jury to ask the Italian team to replace the gates.

The new course still proved challenging, with Ligety, Mario Matt of Austria, Manfred Moelgg of Italy, last year's winner Cristian Deville of Italy and slalom world champion Jean-Baptiste Grange of France unable to finish.

This is the last season Kitzbuehel will run the classic combined event of downhill and two slalom runs on consecutive days. The competition is likely to be replaced next year by a super-combined event with a speed race and one slalom run on the same day.

A limited group of slalom skiers will take part in a city event in Moscow on Tuesday, the last World Cup race before the Feb. 5-17 world championships in Schladming, Austria.

Death toll rising in Egypt riot after soccer violence verdict

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court sentenced 21 people to death Saturday on charges related to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence, touching off an attempted jailbreak and a riot that killed 16 in the Mediterranean port city that is home to most of the defendants.

The verdict follows deadly clashes between police and demonstrators on Friday, the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. Such cycles of violence, often lasting for weeks and costing dozens of lives, have occurred regularly over the past two years.

Die-hard soccer fans from both teams, known as Ultras, hold the police at least partially responsible for the Port Said deaths and criticize Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi for doing little to reform the force.

Al-Ahly Ultras in particular have been at the forefront of protests. But anger also is boiling in Port Said, where residents say they have been unfairly scapegoated.

Immediately after the verdict, two police were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as live rounds, at the crowd outside the prison, killing 14, security officials said. Hundreds were wounded. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Security officials said the military is being deployed to Port Said ? the second such deployment in less than 24 hours. The army was widely used to keep order by top generals who took over after Mubarak, but the military has kept a much lower profile since Morsi was elected as president in June.

Morsi cancelled a scheduled trip to Ethiopia Saturday and instead met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly-formed National Defense Council.

The military was also deployed overnight in the city of Suez after eight people died in clashes between security forces and protesters opposed to Morsi. Another protester was killed in Ismailiya, and security officials told the state news agency MENA that two policemen were killed in Friday's protests, bringing the death toll on the second anniversary of Egypt's uprising to 11.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid read out the death sentences related to the Feb. 1 riot in Port Said that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team. Defendants' lawyers said all those sentenced were fans of the Port Said team, Al-Masry. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

The judge Saturday said in his statement read live on state TV that he would announce the verdict for the remaining 52 defendants on March 9.

Among those on trial are nine security officials, but none were handed sentences Saturday, lawyers and security officials say.

Fans of al-Ahly, whose stands were attacked by rival club Al-Masry in the Feb. 1 incident in Port Said, had promised more violence if the accused did not receive death sentences. In the days leading up to the verdict, Al-Ahly fans warned of bloodshed and "retribution". Hundreds of Al-Ahly fans gathered outside the Cairo sports club in anticipation of the verdict, chanting against the police and the government.

Before the judge could read out the names of the 21, families erupted in screams of "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for God is great, with their hands in the air and waving pictures of the deceased. One man fainted while others hugged one another. The judge smacked the bench several times to try and contain reaction in the courtroom.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17 year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in the melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

The verdict is not expected to calm tensions between the two rival teams. The judge is expected to make public his reasons for the death sentences March 9, when the remaining 52 defendants receive their sentences.

A Port Said resident and lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence said the verdict was nothing more than "a political decision to calm the public."

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

The violence began after the Port Said's home team won the match, 3-1. Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch after the game ended, attacking Cairo's Al-Ahly fans.

Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a chained gate until it broke open. Many were crushed under the crowd of people trying to flee.

Survivors of the riot described a nightmarish scene in the stadium. Police stood by doing nothing, they said, as fans of Al-Masry attacked supporters of the top Cairo club stabbing them and throwing them off bleachers.

Al-Ahly survivors said supporters of Al-Masry carved the words "Port Said" into their bodies and undressed them while beating them with iron bars.

While there has long been bad blood between the two rival teams, many blamed police for failing to perform usual searches for weapons at the stadium.

Both Al-Ahly Ultras and Al-Masry Ultras widely believe that ex-members of the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak helped instigate the attack, and that the police at the very least were responsible for gross negligence. It is not clear what kind of evidence, if any, was presented to the court to back up claims that the attack had been orchestrated by regime officials.

"The police are thugs!" yelled relatives of the deceased inside the courtroom before the judge took the bench.

As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to the nation's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval, though the court has final say on the matter.

All of the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? have the right to appeal the verdict.

The melee was the world's deadliest soccer violence in 15 years.

The Ultras are proud of their hatred for the police, who were the backbone of Mubarak's authoritarian rule. They then then directed their chants against the military rulers who took over after Mubarak's ouster.

Ultras from several Egyptian sports clubs were engaged in deadly clashes with police near the Interior Ministry headquarters in Cairo that killed 42 people less than three months before the soccer melee in Port Said.

Can Brands Tell A Story In Six Seconds Or Fewer? Ritz, Dove And Trident Think So

7618546_e1adbf6aae_zWhenever a new platform launches these days, brands are instantly checking them out to see how they can “become a part of the conversation.” What that really means is how they can use a site like Twitter, or its new app Vine, to get your eyeballs, interact with you and, of course, sell you more stuff. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s commerce at its purest. The story isn’t that brands try out new platforms. That’s boring. The interesting part is how they approach them and why. Now that consumers have the power to skip through commercials on programs that they record, creative advertisers have to start pushing the envelope on generating interesting and persuasive messages outside of the television set. I spoke with VaynerMedia?founder Gary Vaynerchuk, and his firm urges their clients to test new things out. When he says test it out, he means it: I tell our companies that there’s a 72 hour rule where you’re not even thinking about an ROI or how you can generate business. They should just try things out. Vaynerchuk’s companies are definitely giving Vine a swing, and the brands include GE, Ritz Cracker, Dove and Trident gum. The initial six-second vines include fun spins on their iconic brands, products and logos. What will it do for the company right now? Probably nothing, and that’s OK with the brands and VaynerMedia. Here’s a look at what Trident shared as its first Vine, just a few clips of people chewing the gum: While this clip might not make you want to run out and buy a pack, it does humanize the brand a little more, making it about people and not the stuff that people stick under your airplane seat. Still though, you can see how this new platform brings out a new form of creativity, making you pack as much as you can into a six-second video. There are “real” people in this clip, not the models that we’re used to seeing on TV. Another one of Vaynerchuk’s clients, Dove, did something pretty fun in its first vine. When he told me that Dove was giving the new platform a chance, I asked him how Dove could possibly make its product seem interesting, clever or funny with six seconds of video. Apparently, the team thought about it and here’s what they came up with: Once again, does this make you want to

Scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have been awarded approximately $1.2 million from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health to identify, test and develop a series of drug candidates for a number of diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease and several neurodegenerative disorders.

Derek R. Duckett, associate scientific director in TSRI's Translational Research Institute, and Peter S. Hodder, senior director of lead identification at the Translational Research Institute, will act as co-principal investigators for the three-year grant.

The project will focus on an enzyme known as ASK1, which is part of a larger family of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAP kinases) that help control how cells respond to stress and is involved in mediating cell survival and programmed cell death (apoptosis). Genetic target validation studies have demonstrated that loss of this kinase shows remarkable efficacy in animal models of various diseases.

"While ASK1 is a highly druggable target, no tool compounds are currently available to probe its biology," Duckett pointed out. "This award will help us remedy the situation."

The new grant will allow the Scripps Florida scientists to perform a high-throughput screening campaign of the TSRI compound collection at their state-of-the-art screening facility. "Our team approach will identify the best lead molecules that will help define the roles that ASK1 plays in normal physiological processes as well as in disease states," Duckett said. "Such leads will also serve as good starting material for chemistry optimization efforts for future therapeutics."

"A very exciting prospect of this research effort is that Scripps's drug discovery compound collection will be assayed for novel inhibitors of ASK1 activity," said Hodder. "Past screening efforts with this collection yielded the antecedents of clinically relevant compounds, and the research plan we have in place bodes well for a similar outcome from this effort."

Lightning linked to onset of headache, migraines

Jan. 24, 2013 ? University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers have found that lightning may affect the onset of headache and migraines.

These results, published in the Jan. 24, 2013 online edition of the journal Cephalalgia, are the first tying lightning to headache and could help chronic sufferers more efficiently anticipate headache and migraine arrival and begin preventive treatment immediately.

Geoffrey Martin, fourth-year medical student at UC, and his father Vincent Martin, MD, professor in the division of general internal medicine, UC Health physician and headache expert, led the study which showed that there was a 31 percent increased risk of headache and 28 percent increased risk of migraine for chronic headache sufferers on days lighting struck within 25 miles of study participant's homes.

In addition, new-onset headache and migraine increased by 24 percent and 23 percent in participants.

"Many studies show conflicting findings on how weather, including elements like barometric pressure and humidity, affect the onset of headaches," Geoffrey Martin says. "However, this study very clearly shows a correlation between lightning, associated meteorological factors and headaches."

Participants who fulfilled the criteria for International Headache Society-defined migraines were recruited from sites located in Ohio and Missouri and recorded their headache activity in a daily journal for three to six months.

During this time, the location where lightning struck within 25 miles of participant's homes as well as the magnitude and polarity of lightning current was recorded.

"We used mathematical models to determine if the lightning itself was the cause of the increased frequency of headaches or whether it could be attributed to other weather factors encountered with thunderstorms," says Vincent Martin. "Our results found a 19 percent increased risk for headaches on lightning days, even after accounting for these weather factors. This suggests that lightning has its own unique effect on headache."

He says that negatively charged lightning currents were also particularly associated with a higher chance of headache.

"There are a number of ways in which lightning might trigger headaches," he says. "Electromagnetic waves emitted from lightning could trigger headaches. In addition, lightning produces increases in air pollutants like ozone and can cause release of fungal spores that might lead to migraine."

"This study gives some insight into the tie between headaches or migraines, lightning and other meteorologic factors," says Geoffrey Martin. "However, the exact mechanisms through which lightning and/or its associated meteorologic factors trigger headache are unknown, although we do have speculations. Ultimately, the effect of weather on headache is complex, and future studies will be needed to define more precisely the role of lightning and thunderstorms on headache."

For Chavez impersonator, cancer no laughing matter

MIAMI (AP) ? It's an hour before showtime, and Gustavo Rios is transforming himself into Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

A makeup artist paints his skin a dark olive tone. A plastic mole is glued strategically on the upper right corner of his forehead. Large, latex ears and a short, black wig cover his head as he squints and purses his lips in front of a mirror.

He mimics Chavez with comical, exaggerated precision, his voice billowing in a triumphant tone and his hands prancing in the air. It's a mockery that came with a price in Venezuela, where the boisterous, domineering president has carefully cultivated his image as a widely supported savior: Rios was taunted, threatened, robbed, even had his car set ablaze.

Rios fled Venezuela, and now his act is featured in a Spanish-language show broadcast on U.S. airwaves. Meanwhile, the real Chavez lies ill in a Cuban hospital recovering or suffering ? no one seems to know exactly ? from complications following cancer surgery in December.

He dresses in the president's iconic red and pokes fun at being in the hospital. On a recent show, he stood chained to an IV but danced to the 1980 hit "Celebration" as he played Nintendo Wii. What he doesn't do: mention the word "cancer." Rios knows what cancer is like. His own father has it.

"Cancer is a very grueling illness," he says, his voice solemn.

Rios first did his Chavez impression on a radio show called "Con Las Pilas Puestas" ? "With the Batteries On" ? in Maracaibo, a city along the western coast of Venezuela that is his family's hometown. He pretended to talk with the presidents of Cuba, Russia and Iran and Osama bin Laden about conquering the world. On one episode, he schemed to kidnap the president of the United States and torture him with hours of Mexican norteno music, a folk genre that features the accordion and has roots in polka.

Not everyone thought it was funny. Supporters of Chavez, who for years has condemned U.S. capitalism and pushed a socialist platform, called him names: Weakling. Imperialist. Oligarch. On four occasions, his car was robbed. Then it was set on fire outside the studio in midday. There were threatening messages, notes that promised death.

Eventually, he took his wife and 3-year-old son and filed for political asylum in Miami, home to the largest Venezuelan population outside the South American country ? most of them fiercely anti-Chavez.

"It was terrible," he says. "Leaving my family was the worst."

He had no contacts, no real way of making a name for himself in radio again. So the now 40-year-old comedian did what most immigrants do: He washed dishes. Delivered pizzas. Painted buildings. Meanwhile, Rios also put together a demo tape of his impressions ? he does more than 80 public personalities ? and dropped it off at studios. A Cuban actor who had worked in Venezuela and was on the radio in Miami heard it and called him for an interview.

"He was one of the first people I listened to imitating Chavez," said the actor, Omar Moynelo. "For me, it was a great find."

More and more Venezuelans were leaving their country and settling in Miami. There were comedians in the city imitating Fidel Castro, but no one impersonating Chavez.

Four years ago, Rios landed a job on MegaTV. Around the same time, his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Rios was still waiting for his U.S. citizenship and could not go back to Venezuela to be with him. As his father went through chemotherapy and radiation, Rios tried to console him on the phone, send money and make him laugh with clips of his impressions.

Then, nearly two years ago, Chavez was diagnosed with the same disease. Officials have never confirmed what type of cancer he has, but Chavez has now undergone repeated surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. He has not been seen in public since Dec. 11.

At first, Rios thought it was another temporary setback or even a ploy; Chavez would go to Cuba and emerge victoriously once again. But then came the day of his inauguration. Chavez was still absent. Rios and the writers at MegaTV were careful to strike a balance: Funny but not cruel. And if it is confirmed Chavez is in his final days, Rios says he'll stop the act altogether.

"A sickness like that, no one should make fun of," he says.

So Rios skirts around it. Felipe Viel, the host of "Esta Noche Tu Night," tells the audience they are getting a live transmission from Chavez's hospital room. Rios then appears in a red pajama and green military jacket. Sometimes, he is in a wheelchair, ill but startlingly robust. He acts childish and throws pills on the floor.

On Thursday's episode, he was up and swaying his hips to a Nintendo dance game. A nurse in a low-cut white uniform entered the room. He flirts, and she flirts back. He resists her romantic proposition.

"The paparazzi will take our photos!" he exclaims.

"Speaking of that," the nurse with curly, blond hair says, "did you see the photo in El Pais?"

Earlier Thursday, the Spanish newspaper had withdrawn a photo from its website and print editions that alleged to show Chavez with tubes in his mouth after discovering it was fake.

The phone rings. It's the secretary of the Organization of American States. She's coming to visit. The fake Chavez quickly hides all evidence of his Nintendo games.

Rios says he wants to make those jokes in Venezuela the way U.S. comedians imitate and make fun of presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

"I want the Chavistas to laugh with us," he says. "You have to know how to laugh at yourself."

And he wants to be in Venezuela with his father, who is still undergoing chemotherapy. But he knows his imitations aren't welcome there and worries about what might happen if he returns. It won't be safe to mock Chavez there until he's gone, and by then, Rios will have to find a new act.

In Miami, his Chavez and other impersonations have earned him recognition. People notice and thank him on the streets for making them laugh. At the studio, an audience of about 20 people sit in metal folding chairs, chuckling at his charades. It's a momentary relief, for them and Rios.

"It helps me get rid of all that energy," he says, "all those things one carries inside."

Carbonite Currents Keeps the Files You?re Working On In Sync on All Your Devices

Carbonite Currents Keeps the Files You’re Working On In Sync on All Your DevicesCarbonite Currents Keeps the Files You’re Working On In Sync on All Your Devices Windows/OS X/Android/iOS: Carbonite Currents keeps track of the documents you open and work with, and gives you access to all of them on any device. If you work on a file and forget to put it in your Dropbox folder or email it to yourself, Currents shows it to you. Plus, it's completely free.

The video above does a great job at describing Currents, which is Carbonite's first non-backup related product. Install the free app on any device you work with, desktop or mobile, home or at the office. Then, as you work, the files you access will float to the top of your Currents list. You can select the folders on your computer you want Currents to keep an eye on for changes. You can even select items from your mobile device for Currents to watch, like your camera roll, music, or movies. Be default, the app will keep 30 days of revision history and file/folder changes, so you don't have to worry about accidentally deleting something or overwriting a file you meant to open or change.

Carbonite Currents Keeps the Files You’re Working On In Sync on All Your Devices Once installed, Currents shows you all of your most recently changed or created files on all of your devices, in all of your watched folders. You can open them right from currents and work with them immediately. You can share files with others, view or add comments to the files, or view the revision history on any device.

Carbonite positions Currents as a bit of a competitor to Dropbox, which you know we're huge fans of. We don't see it that way: Currents is more of a useful addition to a cloud storage service, not a replacement. You can even tell Currents to monitor your Dropbox folder if you want?I did. You don't have to manage another cloud service, or deal with storage quotas or issues?it's just an easy way to get access to and organize the files you work with most often, anywhere on any system they may be.

If you're interested, the service is in public beta, and its Android app is live at Google Play. iPhone and iPad users stay tuned, their app should be in the iTunes App Store shortly. Expect a few bugs here and there (like files that are slow to load or appear in Currents, and a very non-tablet optimized Android UI, but we still had a better time of it than our friends at AndroidPolice did) but during our testing the service performed pretty well and worked as advertised. I could easily see and open files I worked with on my Windows and OS X desktops using my Android phone. The beta is completely free, and Carbonite is planning a premium service in the future that will let you track longer than 30 days of revision history.

US officials defend handling of Boeing 787 mishaps

(AP) ? Obama administration officials are struggling to defend their initial statements that the Boeing 787 is safe. They are promising a transparent probe of mishaps involving the aircraft's batteries.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood stood by his Jan. 11 assertion that the 787, Boeing's newest and most technologically advanced airliner, was safe. At that time, he and the head of the Federal Aviation Administration, Michael Huerta, declared the plane fit to fly despite a battery fire in one plane.

Five days later, following another 787 battery mishap in Japan, LaHood and Huerta ordered the lone U.S. carrier with 787s to ground the planes. Authorities in other countries swiftly followed suit.

Huerta, joining LaHood, said FAA is working as quickly as possible to find the cause of the problems.

Key facts about Israel's election

Key facts about Israel's general election:

?What's at stake: Voters will elect a 120-member parliament, or Knesset, Israel's 19th.

Citizens vote for party lists, not individual candidates. Seats are allocated in the Knesset according to the percentage of the vote the parties win.

?Who's running: There are 32 parties running. Key parties are the governing Likud Party, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who takes a hard line against the Palestinians and Iran; Jewish Home, led by high-tech millionaire Naftali Bennett, Netanyahu's chief rival for the support of settlers; Labor, headed by former journalist Shelly Yachimovich, emphasizing closing economic gaps; and Yisrael Beiteinu, the far-right secular party led by former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Likud and Yisrael Beitenu have joined forces in a unified list for the election, but will continue to function as separate parties after the election. Two ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties could play key roles after the election. A party must receive at least 2 percent of votes cast to be represented in parliament. In the 2009 election, 33 parties registered to run, but only 12 got enough votes to win seats.

?Forming a government: In Israel's 64-year history, no party has ever won an outright majority of 61 seats, and the country has always been governed by a coalition. Israel's president meets with party factions to determine which party has the best chance of forming a government. The president then taps the head of that party, usually but not necessarily parliament's largest, to undertake that task. That person will have up to six weeks to form a coalition. If successful, he or she becomes prime minister; if not, the president chooses another party to try.

The Vote: There are 5,656,705 eligible voters. Most of the 10,128 polling stations across the country opened at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT, 12 a.m. ET) and close at 10 p.m. (2000 GMT, 3 p.m. ET). Exit polls will be released immediately after voting ends, and official results will trickle in throughout the night. Voter turnout in the last election in 2009 was 65.2 percent. Election Day is a national holiday, and most workers have the day off.

?Israel by the numbers: Population: Nearly 8 million, of whom 75 percent (6 million) are Jews, 20 percent (1.6 million) are Arabs and the rest are classified as "others," most of them non-Jewish immigrants. Per capita GDP is $30,500.

Light shed on complexity of gene therapy for congenital blindness

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Independent clinical trials, including one conducted at the Scheie Eye Institute at the Perelman School of Medicine, have reported safety and efficacy for Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a congenital form of blindness caused by mutations in a gene (RPE65) required for recycling vitamin A in the retina. Inherited retinal degenerative diseases were previously considered untreatable and incurable. There were early improvements in vision observed in the trials, but a key question about the long-term efficacy of gene therapy for curing the retinal degeneration in LCA has remained unanswered.

Now, new research from the Scheie Eye Institute, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, finds that gene therapy for LCA shows enduring improvement in vision but also advancing degeneration of affected retinal cells, both in LCA patients and animal models of the same condition.

LCA disease from RPE65 mutations has two-components: a biochemical blockade leading to impaired vision, and a progressive loss of the light-sensing photoreceptor cells throughout life of the affected patient. The authors of the new study explain that until now gene therapy has been optimistically assumed, but not proven, to solve both disease components at the same time.

"We all hoped that the gene injections cured both components -- re-establishing the cycle of vision and also preventing further loss of cells to the second disease component" said Artur V. Cideciyan, PhD, lead author and co-investigator of an LCA clinical trial at Penn.

Yet, when the otherwise invisible cell layers of the retina were measured by optical imaging in clinical trial participants serially over many years, the rate of cell loss was the same in treated and untreated regions. "In other words, gene therapy improved vision but did not slow or halt the progression of cell loss," commented Cideciyan.

"These unexpected observations should help to advance the current treatment by making it better and longer lasting," commented co-author Samuel G. Jacobson, MD, PhD, principal investigator of the clinical trial. "Slowing cell loss in different retinal degenerations has been a major research direction long before the current gene therapy trials. Now, the two directions must converge to ensure the longevity of the beneficial visual effects in this form of LCA."

In a continuation of the longstanding collaboration between the Scheie investigators and the Section of Ophthalmology at Penn School of Veterinary Medicine headed by co-authors Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD, and William A. Beltran, DVM, PhD, studies were performed to test whether the clinical results were also present in the canine model of this LCA at disease stages equivalent to those in human patients.

"Our gene treatment in this canine model provided the groundwork for the clinical trials of patients, and now we added data to confirm the fact that retinal degeneration does continue despite improved vision" said Aguirre. "The next step is to perform the relevant experiments to ask what intervention will stop the degeneration if added to the gene therapy."

"These new findings contribute to greater clarity in understanding the natural history and complexity of the RPE65 form of LCA and provide a firm foundation for future investigations," said Joan M. O'Brien MD, professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and director of the Scheie Eye Institute.

Co-authors, in addition to the Penn researchers include, William W. Hauswirth, PhD, professor of Ophthalmology, at the University of Florida, Gainesville.

The current patient studies and the experimental studies were supported by the National Eye Institute (NEI) grants U10 EY017280, EY 06855, 017549, 019304, and 022012, the Macula Vision Research Foundation, and the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
