  • The story behind DIAL: How Netflix and YouTube want to take on AirPlay YouTube and Netflix have partnered to develop DIAL, an open second-screen protocol meant to directly compete with AirPlay. An acronym that stands for "DIscovery And Launch," DIAL will be able to discover enabled first-screen devices and launch apps on them?unlike the current versions of the Netflix or YouTube app, which require you to launch both first and second screen apps independently. DIAL is fully supported by anyone yet, but parts of it are already out there, and companies like Samsung, Sony, Hulu, and Pandora are expected to include the protocol in their hardware and/or apps.
