house designs - Ensure a Home Renovation That's Worthy of Your ...

You should go all the way and consider a new house design for your next home renovation. The added expenses make all the difference, especially if you're forced to strip down the walls to expose and treat a pest infestation. Renovation projects involve several phases, but you can always hire someone to handle all the details, from the blueprint to the finishing touches. The design should be your priority, though, since all the other aspects comply with the floor plan. You don't have to hire an architect if you're only renovating the first floor or your backyard, but you'll need a good home builder who'll execute the details in time and within the quoted budget.

You can always look for home plans online if you're stuck with a tight budget. There are sites which let you download blueprints for a fee, which is recommended if you know a little about renovation and you're certain the specifications match with your project. A house designer can ensure the changes are structurally sound, though. He can also recommend themes that complement the houses in your neighborhood and your local climate. Many home designers also have connections to contractors and builders, so you'll likely get a good deal out of the referrals and packaged services your designer offers.

Having a floor plan and home design is but part of the process; the actual renovation will eat up most of your budget. Make sure you make the most out of the expenses and ask for detailed breakdown of the quote. Contractors usually offer ballpark quotes until you ask for specifics, especially if you're hiring their services to renovate your house and design it. A detailed quote usually comes with consultation fees, but the amount is a trifle compared to the inflated estimate you'll receive otherwise.

You still have to consider the variables of the project. If you want to include details which aren't covered by the recommendations, then you'll have to shoulder costs which exceed the quote. Most people insist on having their preferred bathroom or kitchen fixtures installed, especially if the package only includes stock installations. You can also cut down costs by choosing more affordable fixtures, like cedar cupboards instead of oak or mahogany, vinyl paneling instead of marble tiling. A fixed quote ensures you'll have everything covered so you can reallocate the expenses where these matter the most.

Builders also require slack to cover for expenses which can't be included in the quote. These are provisional costs determined during the renovation project, such as a structural flaw discovered on the foundation or the need to replace wall paneling that's crawling with black mold or termites. A provisional sum should be your builder's best guesstimate, and it shouldn't be confused with the ballpark quote of the initial consultation. Again, this provision works both ways. If the builder determines your house can do without aspects of renovation detailed on the fixed quote, then you're entitled to receive the corresponding credit and savings. Choosing house designs shouldn't be too difficult if you hire people who'll take over the small details. Hire the best designer and contractor and ensure your renovation is a worthwhile investment.

Consider house designs by Peter Downes if you?re looking for themes on your next renovation. House designers offer plans that make the most out of your floor space and climate, so choose consultation services and make your investment count.

Colo. suspect may have tried calling doctor minutes before massacre

Courtroom sketch of Dr. Lynne Fenton and shooting suspect James Holmes (Bill Robles)
CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- James Holmes' defense team said their client might have tried calling his university psychiatrist minutes before shooting erupted in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater on July 20.

During testimony, defense attorney Tamara Brady asked Dr. Lynne Fenton if she recognized a university hospital operator's number that appeared on a redacted treatment file for Holmes.

"Did James Holmes call that number nine minutes before the shooting started?" Brady asked.

"I don't know," Fenton responded. It's unclear if Holmes specifically tried to reach the psychiatrist and, if so, why.

Her testimony dominated the nearly four-hour hearing on Thursday in which Judge William Sylvester tried to determine the nature of Fenton's professional relationship with Holmes, whether a notebook Holmes sent to Fenton is privileged information and when Holmes' treatment ended. Fenton also testified she contacted a university police officer on June 11 about Holmes. She said she was concerned and was trying to gather more information.

The defense scored a bevy of victories -- at least temporarily -- on Thursday, winning arguments that Fenton is a psychotherapist and that their professional relationship possibly continued to the date of the attacks. Holmes, still with orange-red hair and a maroon jail jumpsuit, seemed more active and observant than past court appearances. He particularly took notice when the psychiatrist entered the courtroom the first time.

Fenton, who coordinates a team of clinicians that offers mental health assistance to university students, testified that she severed her relationship with Holmes on June 11 -- the last day she saw him before the massacre that claimed 12 lives and wounded 58 movie-goers.

"On July 19, did you have an active doctor-patient relationship with James Holmes?" prosecuting attorney Karen Pearson asked Fenton.

"I believe I did not," Fenton replied.

But Sylvester cautioned attorneys that there might be a difference between when Fenton thinks she terminated the relationship and when the law says it ended.

"I need further evidence," the judge told attorneys, finding for the defense. "Once the relationship is established, it is incumbent that the evidence show it terminated."

Lawyers mostly asked Fenton about the timing of their relationship, how she terminates patient relationships and how she informed campus authorities about Holmes. Prosecutors repeatedly attempted to gain insight into Holmes's treatment. But the defense, led by Brady, objected on numerous occasions, saying the prosecution sought protected information.

Despite the judge's findings, the privilege issue isn't over. On Sept. 20, the court will continue hearings on whether the notebook is covered under doctor-patient laws. That hearing will feature testimony from three more prosecution witnesses and a defense witness.

Among the defense wins Thursday:

* Judge William Sylvester said Fenton's role in Holmes' treatment is more akin to a psychotherapist--which the defense has argued for weeks--than a medical doctor, which the district attorney's office maintained. Information Holmes shared with Fenton is, thus, more protected.

* Absent new testimony or evidence, Sylvester hinted he's inclined to rule that Holmes' treatment with Fenton continued beyond June 11, the last date Fenton saw Holmes, and possibly up until July 19, the day before the shootings. That's key to Holmes' defense because the longer his doctor-patient relationship with Fenton persisted, the longer the defense can invoke privilege.

* Sylvester quashed the prosecution's attempts to delve more into the notebook Holmes mailed to Fenton on July 19, the night before the attacks. The DA's office argued unsuccessfully that observations by an Aurora Police detective were instrumental in answering whether the notebook is privileged information. Holmes' defense team repeatedly objected to the prosecution's tactics.

Three other prosecution witnesses--all law enforcement--testified on Thursday. Greg McGahey, a postal service agent who investigates postal crime, said that evidence suggests Holmes mailed the notebook to Fenton on July 19. Alton Reed, an Aurora Police detective, later testified about seeing the package that contained the notebook through a camera on a bomb robot. Another witness, Steve Beggs, an ATF agent, had his testimony cut short after the defense successfully argued that his testimony was not relevant to the issue of privilege.

Holmes faces 142 counts from the shooting at the midnight premiere of the new Batman movie in Aurora, a Denver suburb.

Chevron says all U.S. Gulf production shut on Isaac

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Chevron Corp, the second-largest oil producer in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, said on Wednesday that all production at its four platforms was shut down and its Mississippi refinery was operating after Hurricane Isaac came ashore Tuesday evening.

Chevron did not specify whether its 330,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi, was operating at reduced rates.

However, the U.S. Department of Energy said on Wednesday that the refinery was running at reduced rates.

The company operates four oil and gas platforms in the Gulf. They are Tahiti, which can produce up to 125,000 bpd of oil and 70 million cubic feet per day of natural gas; Blind Faith, 65,000 bpd of oil and 55 mmcf per day of gas; Genesis, 55,000 bpd of oil and 72 mmcf per day of gas; and Petronius, 40,000 bpd of oil and 35 mmcf per day of gas.

US 'withheld' email evidence in WikiLeaks case

Lawyers for the US soldier charged with passing a trove of classified documents to WikiLeaks accused the military of withholding hundreds of emails over fears of a publicity nightmare.

The defense team for Private Bradley Manning, who could be jailed for life for "aiding the enemy" over the massive security breach, alleged that more than 1,300 messages were ignored by prosecutors for at least six months.

The emails relate to the conditions the 24-year-old trooper was held in during military detention at Quantico, Virginia, where he was sent after a spell in a US Army jail in Kuwait following his arrest while on duty in Iraq in 2010.

Manning's civilian lawyer David Coombs told a pre-trial hearing that 84 emails were released to the defense team on July 25 last year, but he later discovered that 1,290 other such messages had not been passed on to him.

The government "chose to let these emails collect dust somewhere," Coombs said on the first day of the three-day hearing at a military base in Fort Meade, Maryland, 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the US capital.

Military prosecutors then suddenly announced that 600 other messages had been handed to Manning's legal team on Monday, ahead of the hearing, but Coombs persisted with his attack.

"It is the defense position that the government has been playing word games," the lawyer said, implying that the emails were held back because the government had adopted a deliberately narrow definition of their relevance to the case.

The soldier's lawyers argue that he was mistreated at Quantico, and even alleged Tuesday that the former intelligence analyst had been ordered by guards to stand at attention while completely naked.

Coombs then took aim at top Marine officers responsible for running the jail, who he said had put their concerns about bad publicity ahead of their duty to provide fair treatment to detainees.

The emails go as high up the chain as General George Flynn, the then commanding general of the US Marine Corps, who had insisted that Manning be placed on suicide watch, according to Coombs.

Top officers at Quantico regularly sent emails to Flynn informing him of Manning's detention conditions, which the defense says were unnecessarily harsh, and told the Marine commander who the jailed WikiLeaks suspect's visitors were.

The military "kept Manning in maximum POI (prevention of injury)" custody "because they didn't want any negative publicity," Coombs said, reading out an official list that placed media risks at the top of eight noted concerns at Quantico.

After his detention at the Marine Corps Brig from July 2010 to April 2011, Manning was transferred to a prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where he was placed under less restrictive conditions.

If the court finds he was abused, the case could potentially be thrown out, or any eventual sentence reduced.

However, military counsel at Fort Meade denied that the emails had been held back and said they amounted to nothing more than "argument and conjecture" among the various military commanders involved.

"They were concerned about public affairs (media handling) but they were also concerned about Private First Class Manning," said Major Ashden Fein, the lead counsel for the government.

Colonel Denise Lind, the case judge, however said the months-long delay over disclosure of the emails remained unexplained.

"I still wonder why you waited until July," Lind asked Fein, before ruling that she would examine the estimated 700 emails from the original bundle that remain in government hands, before deciding if they too should be handed over.

The publishing by WikiLeaks of official documents, including military logs concerning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, triggered a diplomatic firestorm that hugely embarrassed American officials and rankled the nation's allies.

Manning, who is attending this week's hearing, has not yet entered a plea in the case and his trial now looks set to start in February -- five months later than originally thought.

Republicans nominate Romney as presidential candidate

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Republicans formally nominated Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate on Tuesday to face Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

By voice vote in a raucous arena, delegates to the Republican National Convention united behind the former Massachusetts governor, who this year outlasted a series of conservative challengers to come out on top.

Romney, 65, is in a close fight with Obama with 70 days to go until the election and Republicans hope he will gain some much-needed momentum from the Tampa convention this week.

Israeli court rejects US activist's family lawsuit

HAIFA, Israel (AP) ? An Israeli court ruled Tuesday that the military was not at fault for killing a U.S. activist crushed by an army bulldozer during a 2003 demonstration, rejecting a lawsuit filed by her parents.

The bulldozer driver has said he didn't see 23-year-old Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist who was trying to block the vehicle's path during a demonstration in the Gaza Strip against the military's demolition of Palestinian homes.

The military deemed her March 2003 death an accident, but Corrie's parents said the driver acted recklessly and filed a civil lawsuit two years later.

Explaining the district court's ruling, Judge Oded Gershon said Corrie "put herself in a dangerous situation" and called her death "the result of an accident she brought upon herself." He said the military conducted a proper investigation and rejected the Corrie family's request for a symbolic $1 in damages and legal expenses.

Corrie's family, who flew in from the U.S. for the verdict, lamented the court's ruling.

"We are of course, deeply saddened and deeply troubled by what we heard today," said her mother, Cindy Corrie of Olympia, Washington. "I believe this was a bad day. Not only for our family but for human rights, the rule of law, and also for the country of Israel."

The family said it was strongly considering an appeal to the Israeli Supreme Court, but wanted to read the full verdict before making a final decision.

Corrie's sister, Sarah, held up a picture of her sister lying lifeless in bulldozer tracks. The family's lawyer, Hussein Abu Hussein pointed at it: "How did the bulldozer not see her?" he asked. To say that the driver did not see her "is lies to the living and also lies to the dead."

Following the verdict, the Israeli state prosecutor's office called Corrie's death a "tragic accident" but noted the court exonerated the military of "any blame for negligence." It said it had presented three investigations that found the driver could not have seen Corrie, and noted that the driver acted in a "a military action in the course of war."

"The work was done while exercising maximum caution and prudence and without the ability to foresee harming anyone," it said.

The home demolitions were part of an unsuccessful campaign to halt thousands of attacks on soldiers and Jewish settlers in southern Gaza, along the border with Egypt, in the preceding 3 ? years. On the day Rachel Corrie died, she and other activists had entered a closed military zone to protest the demolition policy.

According to the U.N. agency handling Palestinian refugees, the military had left more than 17,000 Gazans homeless in the four years after a Palestinian uprising against Israel erupted in September 2000. The demolitions drew international condemnation at the time.

In her death, Corrie became the embodiment of what Palestinian activists say is Israel's harsh repression of nonviolent protest to occupation. Israel says by entering conflict zones to try to interfere with military activities, activists recklessly choose to risk their lives.

Her parents have relentlessly pursued her case since going to court in 2005 after a military investigation cleared the driver.

They say they have spent $200,000 to fly in witnesses, attend 15 hearings and translate more than 2,000 pages of court transcripts.

At the news conference, Cindy Corrie read a passage from one of her daughter's letters, biting her lip as her husband, grim-faced, held a microphone for her.

"Life is very difficult. Human beings can be kind, brave and strong, even in the most difficult of circumstances," Rachel Corrie wrote. "Thank you for existing, for showing how good people can be, despite great hardship."

The Corrie case was the first civil lawsuit of a foreigner harmed by Israel's military to conclude in a full civilian trial. Others have resulted in out-of-court settlements.

Lenovo's K860 has been making the rounds for a while now. That five-incher's specs are hardly a secret. But, what has continued to evade us was a price and release date for this quad-core Exynos-powered beast. Thankfully, the Chinese manufacturer has finally come clean and we are happy to tell you the phablet will be hitting shelves tomorrow, August 28th, for 2,188 yuan (about $344). The initial run of this heavily skinned ICS handset will be fairly limited unfortunately -- only 2,000 will be released on the first day. But, we're sure a wider release can't be far behind.

Sea Side Scrap Book ? Find Out How To Promote Your Web Site ...

Internet marketing can be an important part of your online presence. You need to do all of your research so that you don?t end up losing a ton of money or customers. You need traffic to your site to make a profit. There are some tips listed below to help you begin.

If you are having a hard time selling your products you should try a one day promotion that allows users to name their own price and you should be willing to accept all reasonable offers. This will have users buy a lot of products and if they like them they will return when prices are back to normal.

Most people enjoy the chance to become an expert on a subject so they can pass interesting information along to their peers. Consider driving traffic to your site by sending e-mails that offer a free educational seminar or interactive learning module for customers. For example, if you sell cooking utensils and kitchen accessories, you can offer embedded video that features popular chefs preparing different dishes or a printable guide that outlines the design and purpose of various culinary tools.?

Publish a photograph of yourself or a brief personal statement on your website. This personal touch can help you to build trust with potential buyers and also demonstrates to them that you are not hiding behind fancy graphics, logos and text. 'Real inequalities' a threat to Medicare's mission, incoming CMA ...

Posted on August 25, 2012 in Health Policy Context

Source: Globe & Mail ? Authors: Andre Picard

    theglobeandmail.com ? life/health-and-fitness/health
    12 August 2012. ??Andr? Picard

The fundamental mission of Canadian medicare is to ensure no one is denied essential care, regardless of ability to pay ? but it is increasingly failing to achieve that goal.

That is the blunt message from the president-elect of the Canadian Medical Association.

?There are real inequalities around the country,? Anna Reid said in an interview.

The source of that inequality is two-fold, she said: 1) ?Our public system is covering just part of what needs to be covered,? and; 2) health services provided increasingly are varying both among and within provinces/territories.

Dr. Reid, an emergency room physician at Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife, said it is no longer sufficient for medicare to cover only physician and hospital care, because prescription drugs, home care and long-term care are often essential.

It is also troubling that there is a growing gap between the services available in urban and rural parts of Canada, and between wealthier and poorer jurisdictions, she said.

Dr. Reid said these problems have been exacerbated by Ottawa?s failure to enforce the Canada Health Act, its reluctance to promote a national system, and the new way of allocating money under the Canada Health Transfer.

?Physicians, like most Canadians, would like the federal government to play a bigger role in how health care is delivered. We need them to show some leadership,? she said, adding that Ottawa?s role should not simply be providing money, but promoting equality.

She also stressed that doctors are realists, and recognize that there are financial limitations to funding medicare.

?We very much need to have a public debate about the things that are covered and those that are not covered,? she said.

But, for the essentials, fair access is key.

?We need equitable distribution of health care resources and services so that ? within reasonable restrictions such as geography and population [density] ? everyone has equal access to important health-care services,? Dr. Reid said.

Beyond pushing for universal access to essential medical care, she said she will use the CMA presidency to raise awareness about the role of the socio-economic determinants of health, and the need to focus on marginalized groups like aboriginal people, those with mental illness and the isolated elderly.

?That?s a huge passion of mine,? she said. ?I see the impact of social determinants every day in my work.?

A large proportion of her patients are aboriginal people, a demographic group that has rates of alcohol abuse, violence and trauma that are much higher than in the general population.

Dr. Reid completed her medical degree at the University of Ottawa, then did a family medicine residency through the University of British Columbia.

She said she got involved in advocacy ? as president of the Northwest Territories Medical Association and now the Canadian Medical Association ? in hopes of changing the system more fundamentally and giving voice to the voiceless.

?I want to advocate for the marginalized.?

She recognizes, however, that the term is just one year, so her impact will be limited. But Dr. Reid said she is part of a continuum of medical leaders and is proud the CMA is tackling a complex issue like social determinants of health. Despite the challenges from the local to national level, she remains an optimist. ?In my work, I see people who have overcome incredibly difficult circumstances ? residential school survivors with terrible scars. It?s inspirational.

?Their success, their hopefulness, keep me going. I wouldn?t be doing this job if I was cynical.?

The Canadian Medical Association represents the country?s 76,000 physicians, residents and medical students. Dr. Reid is the first president from the Northwest Territories, and only the sixth woman to take the helm in the group?s 145 year history. She is also the first openly gay CMA president.

Lilly drug slows Alzheimer's in some, fails main goals

NEW YORK/CHICAGO (Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co said its experimental Alzheimer's drug showed signs of slowing mental decline in patients with a mild form of the disease, even though it failed to meet the main goals of two large clinical trials, suggesting the treatment could be salvaged.

Shares of the company rose as much as 6 percent on Friday as investors bet the treatment, solanezumab, may help patients in the early stages of the disease, which has so far stumped the research efforts of the world's largest drugmakers.

Lilly did not give detailed data on its findings, but its executives said they were the first glimmer of hope in a large clinical trial that removing the toxic protein beta amyloid from the brains of Alzheimer's patients might alter the course of the disease.

Scientists were far more cautious and said it was impossible to gauge what the findings mean until full results are released at a neurology meeting on October 8 in Boston.

The late-stage trials, known as EXPEDITION 1 and 2, tested solanezumab in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease, compared with a placebo. Both of these studies failed to meet their primary goals.

However, a secondary analysis of the results looking at the two-thirds of patients with mild Alzheimer's from both studies showed a statistically significant slowing of cognitive decline, the company said.

"We recognize that the solanezumab studies did not meet their primary endpoints, but we are encouraged by the pooled data that appear to show a slowing of cognitive decline," said Lilly Chief Executive John Lechleiter. "We intend to discuss these data with regulatory authorities to gain their insights on potential next steps."

Dr Samuel Gandy, of the Mount Sinai Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in New York, said the fact that Lilly had to combine findings from both studies suggests any positive signal is fairly weak.

"That sounds really pretty borderline," Gandy said in an interview. "It's hard for me to characterize without seeing how they came up with this."

Dr Ronald Petersen of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and chair of the federal Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care and Services, called it a soft finding.

"It's a bit subtle, but it seems to be real and it may in fact mean that the drug is doing what it's supposed to do," he said in a statement.

Alzheimer's experts already see reason to test the theory that a treatment may need to be delivered even before patients show signs of dementia, when the disease may have already caused irreversible brain damage.

Lilly's Dr Eric Siemers, who directs the company's Alzheimer's research program, took a different view.

"For us to see what appears to be a signal in this pooled data in mild patients, we are quite pleased," he said. "That would suggest you don't have to move much earlier in the pathology of the disease."

Lilly shares were up 3 percent at $43.69 on Friday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange, off an earlier high at $45.00.

    ODDS STILL SLIM

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia and the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. An estimated 5 million Americans are believed to have the disease, and a successful treatment could be worth billions of dollars.

The Alzheimer's Association called the Lilly results encouraging and said that if data showing a patient response to targeting beta amyloid levels could be replicated, it would be "a major step forward" in fighting the disease.

Wall Street analysts had expected the Lilly drug to fail in its main goals, particularly after a similar treatment from Pfizer Inc and Johnson & Johnson called bapineuzumab did not help either mild or moderate Alzheimer's patients in study results reported earlier this month.

An earlier-stage trial of immune system therapy Gammagard, from Baxter International Inc, has also raised hopes by showing a handful of patients saw their Alzheimer's stabilize while on the drug.

But some were encouraged by Lilly's findings, which left the door open for the drug to be considered by health regulators.

"Basically the odds of approval just went up from like 10 percent to maybe 20 to 30 percent," said Dr Mark Schoenebaum, analyst with ISI Group, noting that patients with a mild form of the disease comprise at least half of the diagnosed population. "(That's) still high risk, but much better than expected."

"Theoretically all possibilities are still on the table," Sanford Bernstein analyst Tim Anderson wrote in a research note. "This includes the possibility that solanezumab could be filed for regulatory approval, given the large unmet medical need in patients with Alzheimer's disease and the generally acceptable safety profile."

"Our best guess is that more studies would have to be done before FDA or other regulatory agencies would consider approving solanezumab," he said.

Lilly executives declined to say whether they would need to conduct any more trials. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it had yet to review the Lilly results, but looked forward to discussing next steps with the company.

The company's trials tested solanezumab in more than 2,050 patients in 16 countries, over an 18-month period. Side effects included lethargy, rash, malaise and angina, compared to the placebo.

Lane County child abuse & neglect prevention program gets positive ...

LANE COUNTY, Ore. (KMTR) -- A program helping first time parents in Lane County, the "Healthy Start Healthy Families" program is getting national recognition for its positive results towards reducing child abuse and neglect.

?Healthy Start Healthy Families? (HSHF) is a voluntary program for around 150 first-time Lane County families. The program provides free home visits from parental experts as a way to try to reduce stresses on at-risk families. Ultimately, the goal is to help prevent child abuse and neglect.

The program was just audited on a national level by "Prevent Child Abuse America.? As a result, the program was ranked as one of the best in the nation.

Lane County averages about 5,000 child and abuse neglect reports a year, about 39% higher than the state average.

Healthy Start?s program managers say many time, abuse happens when parents get stressed over things like money, friends, family or parenting.

The home visits are designed help reduce those stresses, giving families tools and tips to parent and stay together.

?It makes a difference in their lives and increases their protective factors and increases the nurturing environment in the home,? says Nancy Bischofs, program director for the Lane County Healthy Start Healthy Families program.

?This is a really unique opportunity for them to have an expert, a parenting support person who can come in and really be their advocate and lead them, and guide them in a way that's helpful for the child in showing positive parenting techniques,? says Joanna Morales, a family support work for the Lane County HSHF program.

A mom who has received help from the program, Nicole Reid says it has helped her tremendously with her nearly 8 month old daughter Madalynn. Through the program, Nicole has received parenting supplies and materials, information on how Madalynn should be developing and tips on how to be a mom.

?I mean they've helped me so much, giving me books and clothes and even the receipts if they weren't big enough or too small, I could take them back and exchange them, I mean healthy start is an amazing program, I mean every time I get asked what they could do to be better, I don't give them an answer because i don't think there could be anything better,? says Reid.

Healthy Start Healthy Families will continue to work with Nicole until Madalynn turns three years old. There are seven home visiting specialists in Lane County. The program is completely voluntary and free to use.

Program managers say families involved in Healthy Start Healthy Families are two and half time less likely to abuse or neglect their children. For more information on the program, click the following link: http://cms.oregon.gov/OCCF/hso/Pages/index.aspx.

Philadelphia Restaurant Review: Vernick Food & Drink ...

    ?

    ?

    Vernick Food & Drink
    2031 Walnut Street
    267-639-6644

    Three stars.

    Cuisine: Seasonal American.
    Small Plates: $6 to $15.
    Large Plates: $22 to $26.

    ?

Bartender at Vernick Food & Drink in Philadelphia.

?Opening a restaurant is kind of like getting a tattoo,? Greg Vernick reckons. ?Once you have one, all you can think about is getting the next one.?

And he should know. The Cherry Hill native spent the past several years expanding Jean-Georges Vongerichten?s restaurant empire, training chefs at new outposts in places like Vancouver, Tokyo and Qatar. Last year he helped get Talula?s Garden off the ground. And in late April, he finally touched the needle to his own skin (so to speak), opening Vernick Food & Drink near Rittenhouse Square.

It?s a neighborhood restaurant that?s capable of delivering the destination-dining goods?though part of what?s made it a winning debut is the kit?chen?s mo?dest aspirations. Because truly, it doesn?t get much more modest than toast, which is the unlikely ca?nvas for many of Vernick?s most satisfying creations.

They don?t sound like much on the menu, but the thick slices of Metropolitan Bakery sourdough bear a tantalizing grill-fired signature and toppings whose depth belies their simplicity. Peas and bacon brought both things two ways: fresh peas clinging to a jade-green puree, and house-cured bacon in crispy lardons and blowtorched prosciutto-style slices. To the promising fromage blanc and pickled cherries, another version added an overachieving underlayer of deeply caramelized onions. Maryland crab with tarragon, steak tartare with freshly grated horseradish: Vernick is money on the bread front. You?ll never meet a globe-trotting veteran fine-dining chef who can do toast any better.

But he also has a knack for finessing exotic notes from plainspoken herbs. Crammed into a slit-open eggplant whose skin?s been burnt to carbon flakes, a hazelnut-strewn confetti of mint, parsley, chives and dill imbues the smoky flesh with unexpected whiffs of Persian cooking. Dill, parsley and shaved celery work a similar magic on a braised beef cheek, bringing that sweet, wintry hunk of tenderness into warmer weather with a springtime cargo of blanched long beans and garbanzos bathed in rosemary-
lavender water. Muckwa (Indian-style candied fennel seeds) inspired the grace note in a salad of roasted beets and M?oliterno cheese; pistachio nuts were encrusted with it, delivering a subtle anise undertone to the liveliest plate of beets I?ve had in months.

Yes, occasionally haute cuisine peeks through the casual-dining ?curtain?an inter-course amuse of sesame-touched tuna tartare quenelles, say, or a Becherovka sour cocktail whose egg-white meringue, inscribed with a zigzag of Aztec bitters, is so thick and lasting that someone brings a spoon for it when the liquid?s gone. For hard-core epicures, there?s a warm globe of egg curds scrambled in brandied shrimp butter, topped with cayenne-
flecked whipped yogurt, topped in turn with cold sea urchin gonads. This is, in the way of certain cheeses prized for their de?cadent fetor, simultaneously delicious and disgusting. So let that be both a recommendation and a warning.

The only real weak point in my meals came at dessert. There was an undercooked blueberry pie, its crust more soggy than crumbly. A chocolate espresso croquant came off better?but also a little junkier, like a Kit Kat bar imprisoned in a high-end Eskimo Pie.

But for the most part, simplicity is Vernick?s watchword. Sidle up to the smooth poured-concrete bar to nibble on crispy potatoes with shishito peppers, and bask in the breeze wafting through the windows, wide open to Walnut Street. Or belly up to the kitchen counter in back, past the stack of split cordwood, and tug at cool tubes of fresh mozzarella?pulled twice daily?spattered with rhubarb jam and crumbs of pumpernickel toast. The upstairs dining room offers another distinct atmosphere, splashed with light streaming in through the balconied windows but cozy beneath the short ceiling.

?I never expected to have a 3,000-square-foot restaurant with my name on it,? Vernick says. But the way that space is broken up makes it feel more intimate. And so does Ryan Mulholland, the amiable general manager, who abandoned his life in mid-step?like any good Boston kid would when his best pal?s got his inaugural date with the tattoo needle?to help Vernick open his first place. Along with every server I had over a stretch of four visits, Mulholland?s sharp memory and easygoing enthusiasm make this a genuinely amiable spot. It?s not often that a bartender tromps up a flight of stairs to have a quick chat with a customer he served a week before, but it happened here. And not because anyone saw through my alias, either?at least, not if Vernick spoke the truth about failing (like every other restaurateur I?ve reviewed in this column) to pick me out of the crowd.

Vernick?s staff contributes much to the chef?s homecoming. If you spend long enough traveling in somebody else?s caravan?even that of a Michelin-star magnet like Vongerichten?you risk losing the ability to lead your own. But that hasn?t happened to Greg Vernick. I just hope he doesn?t go rushing off for that next tattoo soon, because this one keeps growing on me.
